i have a 2001 f250 7.3 4x4 today i locked the hubs, put it in 4 low and got threw some mud to go hunting fine. got back out of the woods and took it out of 4x4 unlocked hubs and went in reverse 30 yards.. now when i drive it makes a weird sound like a rubbing sound near the front axel..anyone know what this is?
That's my thought also. Being you were in the woods, you may have picked up a stick in between the inside of a rotor and the steel rotor splash guard. Even more likely something kicked up and bent the splash guard and it's now touching the rotor. Easy fix, reach down grab the guard and pull it away from the rotor. If it's to hard use a wedge or screwdriver.
The other possibility is the hub did not release all the way. Another fairly simple fix. Remove the hub assembly (one big clip on the outer circumference). Clean it up, check for damaged parts and put it back together.
still thinking brake or bearing related. I have had crud, small rocks and sticks get crammed in there after driving in mud/woods etc. I would take both wheels off, pop calipers off and inspect everything real close.
