CCV mod "take two"

So, after talking with a few folks and taking into account that my truck likes to burn oil and even more so when in 4X, I decided to go back in the shop and create another version that would hold more oil and no stick out as much as the previous attempt. After two days and about 30 miles, I came up with this much stuff in the old catch can:

After thinking about it, I figured any oil in liquid form that makes its way to the can does not need to be caught in the mesh as it will simply sink to the bottom of the can so I installed a separator to keep the mesh from filling the bottom section of the catch can:

The bolts hold it off the bottom so it does not slide down and also frees up plenty of room for whatever amount of oil I may be throwing off.

I figured I did not need a bottom screw cap as the top can already come off so I went with a flat cap so it now stays tucked up under the door and you can not see it like the last model

I am sure I don't need one that holds this much oil but I am always the "what if" kind a guy and I obviously have too much time on my hands today to create another one of these cans. Here is a pic comparing the old and new

OK, I think I have scratched the CCV bug for now and I will move on. Thanks for taking the time to look and thanks to those that offered suggestions to improve upon what I had made.

What kind of hose did you use. I used heater hose but I am concerned with how long it will hold up. I don't need it disintegrating or collapsing.

Well, I had originally ordered the CCV mod kit from Riffraff so I used the hose supplied from his kit to run from the dog house down to the catch can. As the kit hose was just a little bit short, I added a little heater hose at the end to reach the can. I used heater hose to run from the can and back up to the intake.

First, let me start off by saying I like your CCV Mod. I do have a few questions for clarification. The mesh sits on top of the separator, correct? The coming from "doghouse" is the bottom hose, and the return to the "doghouse" is the top hose, correct? How long is the piece of pipe before the ends are put on?

The "separator" is actually a 4" stainless steel shower drain that is supported by 2" stainless steel screws. Anyway, yes the chore boy sponges (six of them) are placed on top of the separator. The bottom inlet to the catch can is the line coming from the dog house and the top inlet is for the return line to the intake. The section of 4" pipe before the end caps are attached is roughly 6.5 inches in length.

In order to achieve a good fit for the shower drain, I used my grinder to just take off a little around the edges.

I basically:

1. cut a 6.5 inch piece from a 2 foot piece of 4" pipe
2. glue on the top end cap fitting "threaded section" to the tube
3. used a grinder to take edges off shower drain and fit through the bottom of the tube. You fit it through the bottom because one you glue on the top section and use a rubber mallet to get it good and tight, the tube is slightly compressed so its easier to work this part from the bottom
4. take bottom end cap and attach drain
5. insert shower drain in tube and glue on bottom cap
6. drill inlet and outlet holes and attach connectors
7. fill tube with chore boy sponges "on top of shower drain"
8. hand tighten threaded end cap on top of can
9. seal inlet, outlet, and drain with silicone sealant to prevent any leaks
10 install can on truck

If you don't use the same "bolt-up" method I used, you might just use a flat cap on each end but the threaded cap is nice if you ever want to have access to the inside of the tube like I did after a few days of running the last version.

I used clear with the nylon/fabric webbing in it, from Home Depot. It said hydraulic rated, and has held up fine for over two years.

Here's a post from long ago that I wrote when I did my mod. Very similar to Dan's (I like the shower drain idea) but maybe it will fill in some of the blanks.

Thanks Chris. Seems to be pretty straight forward. I get all bent up over the small details that probably don't even matter. I have read a lot of post debating open or closed ccv mod's. The previous owner chose open and I would like to close it. I don't like my truck looking like it is on fire when I am stopped at a red light.

Yea it's totally up to you to whether open or route it back to the stock intake. It's just the matter of installing the hose inlets on the same side or stagger them. I do like the fact that my IC boots are squeaky clean now.
