Hey all, I've been having troublee with my 2000 EX recently, I've had to replace the serpentine belt 3 times in the last year and a half. Nothing looks out of place but I really don't know enough about this engine yet to say that conclusively. I've been using the regular belts from napa, so this time I ordered the HD belt. Will this help or is there something that I need to look at that maybe misalligned that could be shreading these belts. Has anyone encountered the same thing?
Thanks,
GD

Maybe something getting on it or it needs a new adjuster.
I believe it is shredding closer to the engine side. I replaced the alternator a couple of years ago, but I think everything lined up. Is there a way to tell if that's causing the problem?

Take a close look at anything that may be touching it and replace the adjuster if you haven't already. I doubt if getting a "better" belt will solve the problem. Many are lasting over 150k miles.
Brent- when you say adjuster are you refering to the tensioner?
OP- What engine i this for? If its a v10 or 5.4 v8 the belts need to correspond with what is on the truck. As in A/C and alternator equiped. Have you check the idler pulley for bearing wear or any others?

If its shredding on one side and not the other, then it would be from the belt rubbing on the lip of a pulley. I couldn't imagine that just suddenly happening unless something was replaced at the same time...maybe an AC compressor, water pump, alternator, tensioner, etc. If it was a bearing failing, you'd expect it to start slow and get progressively worse.
You hadn't answered the other questions regarding was anything changed right before that first belt was shredded...whats the maintenance history right before that first belt went south?
How is your AC compressor? Working OK? Wondering if maybe its on it's way out and slipping the pulley some, dragging on that belt as it does.
As I mentioned, the only thing that was replaced was the alternator. That was about 2 - 2.5 yrs ago. This is the 7.3l engine. A/C was working fine in the summer. How much side to side play should there be in the tensioner? No I haven't checked for bearing wear, I assume there shouldn't be any play in the pulleys. How would I know if the A/C pulley is dragging? I'm going to take the belt off this morning, how do I check the pulleys?
Thanks,
George
Last time this happened to me it was a worn out adjuster allowing the belt to slide too far forward. The time before it was a power steering pulley that was slid too far back, rolling the front edge of the belt off. The time before that on yet another car was the big aluminum accessory mount on an IDI engine that came slightly loose allowing the accessories to come out of line.
Get a straight edge and check it all out. Then start the engine and sit there and watch it. You'll see it eventually.

Got the belt off and checked for play in the pulleys and found the powersteering pulley was the only one that i could move in and out slightly, the other pulleys seemed ok but I'm doing this by hand so I don't know. I noticed something though on the tensioner. One side of the tensioner has a gap. it doesn't seem to be even all the way around. Looking top down, the gap is on the right side. it's 1/8"- 3/16" gap on the right side of tensioner, no gap on the left. Can this be adjusted? I took pictures, how do I put them on this site?

FWIW, often they make a racket, and before that you'll notice decreased output. Being winter, the output will be fantastic on a nearly dead compressor.
Was going to suggest you position yourself overhead and eyeball the alignment noting position especially of the belt on the tensioner, then have someone start it (see if the belt moves at all in relation to the pulley)...then was going to suggest having them hit the AC then turn it off to see if you hear anything funky.
