GAS Tanks

After asking around I have found two other OE gas tanks other than a Trooper that will allow one to mount the tank under the bed and run the filler out to the fender and out back in the sill below the tailgate. One is a Ford and the other is a C@#$%. The Ford tank that will work is a 70-77 Maverick or Mercury Comet. That neck on them came out in the center panel but with some persuasion it can be ran out lower into the lower and if you somebody would put one of the flip down license plate frame the filler neck and cap would be covered. The Chevy tank that will work is a 77-82 Chevy Van 22 Gallon tank. It is the smaller of the two that was available. The tank will fit between the frame if the rear crossmember is moved back some. A person has the optiion of positioning the tank so the filler neck comes out either on the left or right side. Mine will come out on the Leftside. Hope this helps someone along the way.

Tacson,

I am very interested in this info. Would you please clarify two things -

"70-77 Maverick/Comet ....but with some persuasion it can be ran out lower into the lower and if you somebody would put one of the flip down license plate frame the filler neck and cap would be covered. "

Plse clarify/correct what you mean in the portion "it can be run out lower into the lower"

ALSO -

"The Chevy tank that will work is a 77-82 Chevy Van 22 Gallon tank. It is the smaller of the two that was available. "

Do you mean that 2 sizes of tank were available in the 77-82 Chevy Van and the 22 gal. is the smaller of the two?

Thanks. Tidbits like this are very valuable to the forum.

Plse clarify/correct what you mean in the portion " ANSWER: It can be run out lower into the lower" The sill, the metal portion of the bed below the tailgate but above the bumprer mounting. The neck on that Maverick can be bent slightly so that it comes out in the sill rather than have to be filled thru the bed. It will allow the gas to flow down into the tank like it needs to.

ALSO -

Do you mean that 2 sizes of tank were available in the 77-82 Chevy Van and the 22 gal. is the smaller of the two? ANSWER: yest there was two tanks available the smaller 21 or 22 Gallon and a larger 30 plus gallon tank which is to wide to fit between the rails.

Thanks. Tidbits like this are very valuable to the forum.

John I do know about the Mustang tank. What I was looking for for my 55' was a tank with a neck that allowed you to put a filler either out to your fender or to the lower sill. I did not want to cut in my my bed wood for a filler. I thought someone else might want the same thing... I bought a filler door from Mid50's. The curved hagan door that will mount in the fender. My truck is about 3 weeks from being complete. I hope to take it to Shades of the Past or Chimney Rock. 88 EFI 5.0 with AOD, 87 Crown Front end and 67 Fairlane 8" with a 3.25 ratio, Old Air Climate control. I anticipate it being nice when complete. John I will probably be down your way to the one of the Birmingham swap meets. Thanks

Tacson,

Thanks for the clarification. While I fully intend to go the rear mount, I wanted something that would hold more than 18 U.S. gallons....and I don't want the filler in the bed......

the 61-66 Econoline vans had a tank like the Mustang except it has the filler tube on the driver's side.

When you click the reply button the screen where you type and all the options are comes up, click the button in there that says IMG. You will then have to post the link(web address) for the picture. You can't post pics from computer or floppy disk, it either has to be in your gallery or on a photo host. Let me know if you need any more help. -4speed

Tacson, the main thing to keep in mind for posting pictures into your gallery is picture size. The host only allows resolution of no more than 320,000 bytes. Make sure your resolution is not too high. If you can't change it on your camera when you take to the photo you can resize the photo with this program.http://www.showyourphotos.com/downlo...zer%20Download I have used this and it works well. Hope this helps.
