Had a 2005 F150 King Ranch come in for a no crank condition when it was cold outside. The exact temp is not known, but in south texas it does get cold. Anyways the customer is telling me he has had it here and there...even to the dealer. Know why the dealer couldn't figure it out is beyond me. He's had the battery, starter, etc replaced with no fix. The first thing I did was check for any codes and sure enough there were 2 PATS codes. B1600 and B1602 which basically are incorrect key codes. Had new keys made and programmed then waited till the next morning with the same result...no crank. Removed the steering column trim to check the transmitter and BAM!! Someone had had removed the transmitter from the lock cylinder housing with an ignition key taped to it and wrapped up under steering column. WTF was my first thought seeing that I have never seen this before. I reinstalled transmitter in place and programmed the keys once again and waited for morning. Problem solved and better yet customer happy. Just another day at the office.
This was likely done for a remote start setup. Since you need a RFID key for it to start, taping a spare key there is a common method to work around it.
Hmm, the truck I just bought used has a remote start I don't use, and only came with one key. I wonder if I pull apart the steering column if I will find my missing spare?
