Hi All
I hope someone can steer me in the right direction. My 95 7.3 started this morning fine and I was letting it warm up when it shut off. I have checked the filter on top of the motor by opening the drain valve and a small amount of fuel ran out. After cycling the key no fuel comes out and we tried cycling the key and listening at the fuel tanks and I can't hear either fuel pump coming on. I checked all the fuses under the hood, The solenoid has power on both sides when the key is on. The Icm has power to it. Cant find the fuel crash switch, manual says its on the passengers pillar under the dash but the only thing I can find is 3 plugs. (The truck was not jolted) Seems like whatever controls the power to the low pressure fuel pumps may not be supplying power to them?? I am in central Florida so its not to cold, hi 30s this am. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The fuel pump is run by an eccentric on the cam shaft. Its completely mechanical. Have you tried filling the bowl up with fuel and seeing if it would start? If it runs it dry again, you will pry have to replace the fuel pump.
EDIT: Also, are you getting a wait to start light when you turn the key on? If not, Fues 22 could be to blame, its usually the fuel heater that causes the short.
Yes the wait to start light comes on. Aren't there low pressure fuel pumps in each tank that get the fuel to the filter on top of the motor and the high pressure fuel pump in the valley? It seems that the pumps in the tanks are not coming on??? Cant hear any thing by the tanks. I may be way off base, but thanks for your input.
The fuel pump (the ONLY fuel pump) is two-stage, providing both low and medium pressure. There is no "high-pressure" fuel, as fuel is forced through the injectors by hydraulic oil pressure. Put the fuel filter back in, turn the key to START so the engine cranks for a few seconds, and then look again for fuel in the bowl.
What do you mean by "ICM"? What solenoid are you referring to?
I understood that there was a fuel pump in each tank, Good to know there is not.
The solenoid is the one on top of the motor, Glow Plug??? I meant the idm has power at the fuse.
Yes the solenoid on the top of the motor is for glow plugs, there is also one on the passenger side of the engine bay, that is the starter solenoid.
If you are getting a WTS then fuse 22 is good. I would do like madpogue said and crank it for 5-10 seconds and then check for fuel in the bowl. The filter must be installed or no fuel will pump into the bowl (a fail-safe for incase the filter was forgotten in the installation) check that and report back to us.
I turned the motor over and checked the filter bowl, the only fuel was in the filter itself which came out when I pulled it off. I filled the filter bowl and replaced the filter.
The Glow plug solenoid was also not working there was no power to the back lug and the back lug went to ground/however it did not short out apparently because it was not closing. Replaced the solenoid turned it over and it would not even make an attempt to fire. Sprayed some starting fluid in the air cleaner and it started. I shut it off and it seems good now starting right up.
I am letting it run in the yard now to see if it continues to stay running. I just don't want to be left stranded somewhere.
Is it jelled up? Where are you located?? These cold temps have a lot of diesels in the northern states having starting problems.. (just went thru it myself) Be careful with the ether thats a no-no with glow plugs you may end up eating the air cleaner if it detonates.... Try some power service 911 or some #1 diesel if its available if it stalls out on you again......
Well I started the truck this morning. It started right up, I let it idle to warm up and it died just like yesterday. Tried to start it and it would not start. Pulled the filter, no fuel, filled it up, and with a little starting fluid it started and ran a hundred and fifty miles with no problem. Seems like the fuel filter is draining down overnight. Any thoughts on this??
Thanks for your help.
