If you are doing a build, and have plenty of parking space......Time to buy a Dent parts vehicle! Im actually not joking........a pair of good mirrors, some trim pieces, a fuel tank....before you know it, a $500-$1000 parts truck just might pay for itself?
Are the type 9s from 80s models identical to the Dentside ones? Do they bolt right up?
No they are not the same. The swing arms are longer and need to be mounted lower so they don't interfere with the recessed dent area. The mount brackets are wider on the 80's style so the bolt holes won't even match up on the upper bracket. And the mirror heads are different. Also 80-81 uses a similar if not the same head. 82 I think thru to 86 used a different mirror head. They are a little smaller on the height, but just as wide I think. Then 87 the mirror heads changed slightly again. As these looked the same as the 82-86's, but they didn't pivot like the 82-86 heads. Therefore you only had a side to side adjustment. Not an up/down adjustment on the mirror head. At least that's how they were between my 86 and my brothers 87 f150's.
Actually it looks like my truck has had about every mirror ford made on it. There are 3 sets of holes other than the ones my mirrors are in. I bought 2 sets of heavy duty adjustable mirrors from jy for $50. Will post pics when i pick them up Wednesday.
well, I sort of have a parts truck, but my son might get mad if I start taking parts off his truck. He has a 77 F150 with a 400. Had been redone at some point not to long ago. Looked really hard at the mirrors. I actually have already been working on it for awhile. Have some parts laying around, but the big things I need are just easier to buy.
here are my $50 mirrors.
here nearly pristine driver side mirror, some rusty hardware

Reason: photo screw up
My 77 highboy has a variation of the type9s with farther spread apart bolt holes top and bottom. It's also got larger square mirrors and a 3" arm that flips out to extend the distance of the mirrors. my 76 f150 has type 9s and me likely.
