I have a 1946 1/2 ton pickup that I have very slowly been building on and decided today to tackle my instrument cluster beautification project. Well, in the process I discovered I have a speedo from a big truck! I was wondering if there is a way to convert the guts of this speedometer to the correct 100 mph version??? Any help is greatly appreciated.....
There is a guy on the H.A.M.B named Bill that was real knowledgeable and very helpful about the cluster in my 1940 big truck. I'm sure he can assist.
PM or email me for his contact info. Or do a search on the H.A.M.B. for instrument decals.
Alright, I will do that. I was hoping someone knew of a vendor that will sell just the gears from the 100 mph version and I could rebuild this unit myself. Maybe he will know of one
I'm sure that the actual speedo mechanism is the same for both; it's the face that's different (60 mph vs. 100). All you need is a decal set. Mac's sells a good one (for a reasonable price) that includes the gauges and also a new set of odometer tapes.
I don't know if you're going to have the entire cluster apart but if you do, you would want to check the condition of the gauge insulators. I make new ones out of old computer cards; they keep their shape forever compared to the laminated paper that distorts considerably after a few years.
I recently purchased a 1940 Ford 1-1/2 ton panel delivery dually that has a well functioning 100 MPH pickup/car speedometer. I would like to replace it with a proper 60 MPH truck speedometer. Have you made progress going the opposite direction since your January post? Maybe a trade??

I have had service done at this place - excellent work - they refurbished my mechanical 1940 ford one ton truck speedo...
United Speedometer

then I went to autozone and orderd sunpro 12v gages for oil, fuel, temp, and batt.
I disassembled the mileage wheel and glued on new numbers - you can get free web graphics to match font, size, color, and resize them to print accurately, including red color if you have a color printer. I printed out on paper, cut the individual strips and glued them on . worked great.
you can search manufacturers websites to get correct look and designs, pointer travel (90 degrees, 180 degrees) and direction (bottom pivot, top pivot, side pivot)
then I added a few 12v lights for instrument cluster power at night....
Found United Speedometer in CA while searching for United Speedometer in TX; also found a ton of BBB complaints for that CA company and will stick with your referral.
