I have a 100 gal transfer fuel tank I want to mount on my flat bed but not sure I herd if you bolt them down they will crack any ideas on how I should mount it maybe a rubber mat or a crate ?
What a timely post. I have a 91 gal and last night I noticed it was leaking. Come to find out, the bracket on the right side of the tank busted and my cutoff valve stem had a crack in it that cut through the fuel line. I purchased 4 heavy "L" brackets that I am going to bolt down to keep the tank from shifting. I also use a fuel pump so I can plumb it from the top. A buddy of mine had the same issue and he had brackets bolted down that ran the entire length of the fuel tank on all sides. Basically built a small box for the tank to sit in.
He cut the tab that lies flat on the bed that is designed to be bolted down. The main problem I have with the tabs is that they are in the most difficult places to access from under the vehicle depending upon the type of fuel tank. The problem with the tabs is that each tab is about an inch and a half (only three for the entire tank) wide and if you want to put the tank in a specific spot and the ribs of the bed do not line up correctly, you either pound the tab into submission so that it follows the contour of the bed or you move the tank to another location. We both have RDS tanks and while the tank its self is nice, the tabs they weld on for securing the tank are complete junk. My buddies tank fits nice and snug as he welded the braces in place next to the tank. You might be able to measure it out and make the box first and then drop the tank in but if you are off just a bit the tank will have some movement. I finally got mine shut down and transferred about 30 gallon to the main tank. Once I get the other 15 gallons out, I am going to get these brackets bolted down so this thing want have a chance of moving but I need to have it empty to pull of the broken shut-off valve on the bottom to be replaced by a cap.
Not sure if the OP is still following this as the thread is a bit old. In the below pic you can see the tabs that come with the RDS tanks. While I love the tank, the tabs are not good and they will eventually break as mine did after 5 years or so. I went to Lowes and picked up 4 brackets and bolted these around the tank so this puppy is not going to go anywhere now. There are other ways but this was an quick and easy fix. An additional shout out for RDS. I moved the hose from the bottom to the top and I discovered I have an older model tank that does not have the sleeve installed to pump from the top of the tank. I called RDS and they are sending me out a replacement free of charge. Great working with a company that looks out for their customers.
