I just purchased a Champion radiator for my 51 Merc M-1. I am running an AOD transmission and am wondering if it matters which port on the rad the tranny cooling lines connect to? I know which is the hot out of the tranny, but with both fittings on the bottom of the rad, does it make a difference where they connect?
If you are running just the one trans cooler then it doesnt matter. The only time I check the trans input and output is when I am running a 2nd in series external cooler, I want the output of the 2nd cooler to go to the input of the trans.
Many aftermarket radiators have various bungs welded on them for temp sensors, etc...just be sure that you are in fact connecting to the trans cooler ports and not one of the ones that go into the water jacket.
Champion radiator in my caddy is set up like this, blue plugs are the cooler. I have not taken my F1 champion radiator out of the box yet but should be similar.
Thanks Dave, that is exactly what mine looks like as far as inlet/outlets. So to confirm, it shouldn't matter which of the cooler inlets are used for the hot "in" from the tranny?
