Hi, I purchased a 6.7 Diesel 2014 F250 Super Duty Crew Cab about 3 months ago. Yesterday I started my truck using the remote starter from inside my house. Seconds after I heard a loud noise. Looked outside, saw nothing and thought nothing of it till I went to open my door and realized that the driver door window shattered! I live in a quiet area, it wasn't a rock thrown at my truck or anything like that, it just Blew!!!!
Has anybody ever heard of such a thing? I'm wondering if the truck might have some sort of pressure or torque if you wish on that window to make it just pop! My mirrors were folded in however I can't see that playing a role......
never heard of that happening before. I've heard of windshields cracking if you quickly change the temp of air going to the glass, but since the truck had just be started that wouldn't be the case for you. Maybe the glass had a stress fracture somewhere and the vibration just caused it to go.
Several years ago my wife was in the house and heard a loud pop outside. Her Sonata, which was fairly new at the time, was parked in the driveway. She went outside to find the rear driver's side window gone and glass everwhere. She of course thought someone had thrown a rock at it so she called me at work.
I came home and looked closely and there was no rock or any other object and the glass was distributed fairly evenly inside and outside the car. The temperature that day was about 105 so the only thing we could figure was that there was defect in the glass and the intense heat sitting in the sun caused it to finally let go. The same thing happened to my grandfathers car while he was at a country club in Palm Springs, but was caused by a golf course sprinkler hitting his rear window on a 110 degree day.
When the mobile glass guy came to replace it a day or two later he said it isn't that uncommon to see it happen, usually from heat, but he also sees it once in a while during cold snaps. No matter how well we cleaned it, we found glass in that car until the day we sold it.
Hopefully you can get Ford to pay for it. As you know, anything other than the windshield is $$$$.
I really appreciate the reply! I'm in quebec where we do have cold spells but it wasn't very cold at all when it shattered and I just started the truck!
I will contact ford today to see if they are willing to do anything but it's unlikely they will do anything unless they have several complaints on file and care to admit to them lol
I had this happen in my 2002 f-250 driving down the road. with my wife in the passenger seat the passenger window just blew out. living in a rual area at first we thought it was a stray bullet. but we never found any evidice of that. I replaced the window and it never happened again. needless to say it scared the hell out of me and more so my wife
Lol that's hilarious! Thanks for driving my coffee out my nose lol
I wrote a letter to ford offering photos and video footage of the event which was caught by my home surveillance system! I doubt very much they'll reimburse me but it's worth a try. I also mentioned this forum as well comments from the glass repair outlet which is Canadian wide with their comments claiming that this is not uncommon.
For $505 bucks, it's worth a try! It will help pay for all the toys I've bought to dress this puppy up!
I had a fairly new ORIGINAL MINIVAN back in the mid 80's. I came home from work one day and found the large rear/driver side window had exploded inward. I blamed it on the extreme heat as it was parked/ closed up in the summer sun.
Also, about a year ago my (room temp) microwave did the same thing. I was home (in a diff. room) when I heard it. Found glass bits forever.
Glass is usually not under the same deductible as the collision.
I would call the agent and ask. Also you may want to think about
a used window glass. I replaced mine do to sand scratches and
the wrecking yard only wanted $75.00 for good used glass.
It only took me about 20 minutes to install it.
I agree $500 allot of cash but I don't have time To search for used especially for a brand new 2014. I'm pretty meticulous with my things and couldn't have had it repaired fast enough! Lol
As for my deductible, you are correct in that glass is different from collision however a great deal on a 2 year policy fully covered with replacement cost included for $440 per year so with that deal came a $500 deductible on glass.....I use the truck to pull my boat in the summer and skidoo trailer in the winter.....I don't even put anything in the box lol covered that up with a flip back or whatever it's called to keep it clean and purty lol
