Hey guys just got rid of my 07 ram 2500 so I could treat the lady with a nice ride to get to work with. Now I have picked up a 77 that I believe might be a highboy and I was wondering if anyone could decode the vin for me?
F26HRY22372 is the vin
I've been browsing around the sight and you guys and gals have a ton of info I'm sure I'll be putting to good use in the near future!
Early '77 f250 4x4's were high boys late '77 were not. easy way to tell does it have a divorced or a married transfer case? meaning is the transfer case attached to the tranny or is there a short drive shaft between the two. By the pic it looks to be a high boy but it could have a lift on it.
The 400 will have a 2bbl carb and is a big block. My 78 f350 dually work truck had the 400. My 75 f250 camper special has the 390 and it's a whole lot faster than my dually. Theres a lot of reasons for that, to many to list right now. Your probably better off with the 390 as the 400 was pollution controlled and restricted.
From your photo above.. unless it's been swapped, having the gas tank behind the seat is a good indication of a High Boy. Oh yeh, and the front cross member below your bumper. Looks like you have a High Boy...

Reason: spelling
I'll check the transfer case in the morning and double check.
The guy I bought it from said it had a 400 but the vin says 390 any easy differences?
F26HRY22372
F26 = F250 4WD pickup.
1977/79: H = 351M / S = 400 // H = 1968/76 390 2V. 390's were not factory installed in 4WD's. Only V8 available in 1968/76 F100/250 4WD's: 360 2V (VIN engine code Y).
R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant.
Y22372 = 1977.
All 351M's and 400's only came with 2V carbs, have 8 valve cover bolts per side. Ford never used the terms big block or small block, these are GM terms.
Most FoMoCo parts catalog references say the last High Boy was assembled before serial number Y20,001, some say before serial number Y40,001.
But, regardless...both these serial numbers occurred mid-model year 1977 (February).
High Boys have a divorced transfer case, in-cab fuel tank. 1973/77: The width between the inner frame rails behind the cab is 33 1/2" .. same as all 1961/72 F100/350's.
High Boys were available as Regular & Crew Cabs, as a Cab & Chassis, Flareside & Styleside pickups, with factory installed Flat & Stake Beds. No Super Cabs were available.
351M/400 share the same block, the bore is the same, the stroke is different. Measure the stroke to determine engine size.
Wow thanks for the great breakdown. I'll have to get the tape out and do some more checking on the frame. Hey that's all part of the fun though find out what ya got and make it what ya want!
The divorced/married transfer case should be the best indicator of a Highboy.......As Lash stated, its got an incab tank, and it LOOKS like the proper front frame crossmember for a highboy, but without knowing previous owners and the trucks full history, well in 35 years, who knows whats been changed. Because the highboys were not only popular, but often used under rugged conditions, many have had serious modifications done. the late 70's werent good years for the auto industry in terms of exhaust emissions standards, and in states that have since relaxed emissions on vehicles older than a certain year, lots of people have swapped out the 351/400 engines for 460's or 390's. lots of highboys have had the optional Power Assist steering switched in favor of integral power steering, etc
Ok guys I've got a few pics of the truck to verify what I'm working with but I can't get them to load... I'm sure it's old hat for most of you. I looked at the FAQ and it said I should be seeing a manage post option in the posting window... not seeing it. If anyone could send me in the direction I need to be going that would be great.
