On some Fords there is a voltage regulator for the instrument cluster. It reduces the voltage to the gauges. If all your gauges read way low, way high, or not at all, this would be the first thing I would look at. Normally it is bolted to the back of the cluster.
Dont know if your truck has one or not - but it might be worth looking into.
To me, sounds like the regulator, but it could also have lost the ground to the cluster, or like one said, maybe the connector is corroded or loose. But I sorta doubt that in a way. They fit fairly tight on those, and usually don't give much trouble. You could add a temporary known good ground wire to the cluster ground point to verify if the ground is good or not. You could also measure the resistance between cluster ground and the body or frame. You could also measure for your positive to the cluster with a voltmeter. No positive from the connector, I'd bet the regulator.
I wouldn't be surprised if it is the regulator...They are year specific. IE: 67-69 uses one version, 70 uses another version, and 71-72 use yet a third version. Make sure the one you get is the same as the old..BTW, if the cluster and speedo lights work, I'd bet the dash ground is good...MK
Thanks, I will give that a go. Looks like someone has messed with the cluster as the speedo was disconnected and looks like there has been alot of rewiring.
Thanks
