6.0 Knocking and Smoking

Bought this truck for $3000 18mos ago being told the wrist pin was bad, yet the noises (and belching smoke) dont add up to a mechanical issue, that and te obvious presence of the power it should have.

Anyone on here have any advice or experience?
I bought it simply because it has the ZF6 and Manual T-Case, for a cummins swap i still lack the motor for, and my daily needs an overhaul, badly..

I know the history of this truck, and was there upon its purchase in '08, ironically advising against it, he had little problems however, it had injectors in '10, and had issues July '12 to which it was parked, he just didn't like where it was going, I bought it 4 months later, it was used to move 20,000lbs of hay for 2 weeks this fall when my friends truck threw a rod, and did fine.

I don't trust the shops here in Wyoming, diesel is a huge industry out here, and they want top dollar pay for whatever they do, I can fix this, just need help to where i should look, FICM has been ruled out.

Get the truck code scanned and see if it doesn't have a contribution balance code. I'm thinking you have an injector leaking and seriously overfueling a cylinder. I would NOT drive the truck until you get this issue resolved or you could burn a piston.

On Edit: I should have asked you what color the smoke was?

God, its been a year or so since I've even seen the truck, really dark gray is about all i can remember, loud ticking/knocking sound with dark smoke pouring out of the pipe, for some reason I recall it getting worse as it warmed up, but I have worked on a few other vehicles since and a few had temp sensitive symptoms so don't hold the last part to my gospel.

Search for bubble test. That will help you narrow down how to check for an injector leaking back into the fuel rail. Doesn't require running the truck. Check the 6.0 tech folder in the 6.0 forum index. Tons of diagnostic info there.

I guess I should have gone there first, These 6.0s are new to me, I'm a 7.3 guy (have owned 3), I did buy it in 'Dead' condition, I just hope it's fixable without needing a thick wallet.

Thanks for your insight

If you have questions don't be afraid to ask. LOTS of knowledgeable folks here that like to fix vs. replace if possible. The 6.0 is really an easy motor to work on after you get used to it. Knowledge is power

I have a secret lust for the 6.0, the sound, the stock power, I am one of a few that doesn't shun the 6.0 for it's issues, this one I happen to know everything about, was a sale from one friend (Original Owner) to another (Diesel Illiterate) and now me, this is the FIRST major issue it has ever had, I will have it home with me next month, in which time I will be picking apart the archives on here, and hopfully find a solution, would love to keep the 6.0 in her a little longer, even though her fate is with a Cummins 12v (know em inside and out)

I just dont understand everyones desire to cummins swap. Just go buy a dodge! Your going to spend a ton of money getting that done. Just pimp out a 6.0 and enjoy it for 1/2 the cash. Your issue sounds like a injector stuck open or one with a cracked tip.

Why cummins? Simply Preference, obviously one I share with others.

The 6.9 and 7.3 IDIs cannot produce the power a cummins can, I prefer mechanical diesels over Computer/Sensor dependent, I can fix most issues on a Cummins with little available tools and without turning pages in a book when i could be wrenching.

Expensive conversion? yea, but long term it would last longer without downtime over some sensor gone bad that would set me back greenbacks I could use for a pair of shoes for my kid.

I thank you for your input, I hope it is that simple.

If you took the time to pimp out a 6.0. I would put money against a cummins any day of the week. Better mpg, better top end power, and they are meant for your chassis. But then again ive had little problems with my 6.0 and tons with my chasiss.

Shall I ask your permission to hold my own opinion or something?

I see the subject I posted originally got derailed, however, I believe I have gathered the same information I would get from anyone else, thank you both for your time.

Pushing your opinions against others opinions, Won't make you any friends on here, just an FYI.

Just trying to save you from a huge mistake. But seriously you came here (a ford forum) for opinions. Dont get your panties in a bunch when you get some that might favor fords. And you really wont make friends when you hear something you didnt want to. Then act like a douchebag about it.

You are the one who turned this post venomous with your response. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people on here that will go way out of their way to help a 6.0 brother in need. So you will find that a venomous response will not make you any friends here either or encourage people to help you.

Lol, Ok

Thanks for your help, I did no wrong here, if you don't like what I have to say, then don't reply to my posts.

I won't censor my life or change my opinions just to avoid being labelled a 'douchebag', I speak my mind, I asked for help, not to be chastised for what I decide I want in a truck, If I wanted this sort of treatment I would have posted on Pirate4x4.

Cummins is a separate company from Dodge under their own subsidary, contracted with Dodge to provide light duty motors, along with other components, Ford also offered Cummins engines in their heavier trucks, So wanting a Cummins and being on a Ford favored forum holds no water, so I am afraid it is not I who is the 'douchebag' sirs, it is members like you both that make me regret my continued use of this site, YEARS I have been here without any altercations, until today? Whatever

Even Chrysler doesn't like Dodge.

But the Cummins is a good motor.
