Anyone have the spec. on setting the timing on a 96 F-150 w/ a 300? Went to change cap & rotor and broke the screw off in the aluminum housing. Proceded to drill out the screw and broke off the entire tab the cap sits on . So...dropped in a new distributor. Got it real close as it does not miss...but runs like a dog. Going to put the light on it tomorrow if I can fing out what to set it at. Couldn't find it on the sticker under hood.
Havn't used a timing light in 15 years so it should be fun.
I am also looking for the timing and idle rpm cannot find vehicle emissions control lable, it's not under the hood. i also have a timing problem and a miss. timming is set 10' advanced, but jumps 6 degrees about every second. i have a egr restrictor plate installed with a 1/8 inch hole in the center, new iac, tps, intake air temp sensor, temp sensor, and vaccum control relay to egr. fuel psi is 40 running and 45 key on. after market products include: k & n cone fipk, Jet super chip, MSD 6a, and Poweraid throttle body spacer. i have also cleaned throttle body and pulled intake and cleaned it, new plugs and wires, cap and rotor. still has bad gas milage, rough idle, and bad fuel smell at idle, but does not lack power that i know of ? truck has a 120,00 miles on it and ive fought this problem and the hesitation @ 1500 rpms for two years now. i would greatly welcome any and all advise.
To set the timing you have to unplug the SPOUT Connector. On your 96 it is on the firewall on the drivers side. IT is a gray and black connector. After you unplug the connector, then you can hook up the light and set the timing like you usually would.
I will attach a picture to showyou what the connector looks like. It is the connector in the lower right corner. But like I said, on the 96 it will be up on the firewall.
edit: the connector will have two PINK wires going into it

I found the emissions control label but don't know what marking on it related to timing. Has the vaccum routing and spark plug gap. Where is the # degrees BTDC for initial timing with the SPOUT disconnected?

Ok, I just wandered out to my truck and looked at my emissions sticker. Flatlander look on the sticker on top of the air filter housing (air box). That is where I found it. Even has a little section on the timing itself and how to do it. And it told me 10 degrees BTDC is what it is to be set at.
If the base timing isn't listed on the emissions (vacuum map) sticker, it should be on a white sticker on the engine somewhere. On my 4.9L, it's on the front of the valve cover in small type below a LARGE code number.
I'll give her a shot at 10 BTDC. The sticker is missing or never got put on the air box. Thanks for all the help guys. Just to add insult to injury....went out to start the truck up to see if my timing light even works and the starting solenoid died.
Might trade it off on a new F-150 soon if it keeps up like this.
I feel stupid the vecl was on my air box that i had removed when i installed my fipk da.....
Also found a vaccum leak at th egr which smothed my idle some and got rid of the fuel smell.
I still have a slight miss at idle and a miss at the begining of throttle response, could it be the 1/8th inch hole i left in my egr restrictor plate.
thanks.
