hello everyone, Im using a explorer chassis under my 54 f100 pickup, and my question is how much of this stuff on this harness can I eliminate ? there is relay box in the rear of the explorer along with a antitheift box,can it be taken out? im not messing with the engine harness I would just like to take some of the stuff out that I wont need! there are several relay boxes in the front harness also, can I take out any of them? thanks George.
I want to keep the fuel injection with the computer, I do want ant lock breaks but that's about it, im going to keep it simple! what I need to know is what I can take off this harness and not effect the running of the 5.0. to tell the truth I don't even know what most of this stuff is! thanks George.
You don't mention what year Explorer chassis you are using, but I think the 5.0L was only available from '96-2001 and I think all those years had a form of PATS anti-theft. You won't be able to remove that if you plan to keep the original PCM. So you'll need that box along with the transponder antenna that goes around the key cylinder switch. The remote keyless entry system you would be able to get rid of.
Some of the other relay boxes may be for things like the trailer towing harness, possibly air suspension, power windows, etc. You'll want a wiring harness and module locations diagram for the model year you have to help identify what you can likely get rid of for your project.
the explorer im using is a 97, i didnt even think about needing the key and switch antenna!! were would i get a harness dia, silinoid locator diagram??thanks for the help, george.
A friend of mine used the wiring schematic in an appropriate Haynes manual to put a 5.0 and auto trans from an Explorer into his Ranchero. He spent a good bit of time tracing out the wires but he was successful using the Haynes for the wrecked '98 Explorer that he stripped out.
As mentioned by 4x43Hokie, a Haynes or Chilton manual may get you everything you need. You could also get the factory information for a nominal fee from Alldatadiy.com. And of course there's always the popular Internet auction site as a source for factory service manuals.
He actually gutted the column and mounted the switch under the dash and wired as intended. Used it as a hidden switch. The old key would turn the starter but the Explorer key had to be on for it to start.
