Hey I have a 73 F250 with a 390/C6. I kind of want a floor shift with the bench until I can pony up the cash to do a manual swap (or if I keep the auto, just something a bit more "sporty" than the column). So what are you guys using? I was thinking The Hurst promatic 2 truck shifter. It looks as if the **** is removable, is it? I would like something I can put a different **** on as I want to use one that I made myself to fit my awkwardly proportioned hand. Also of note, I'm 6'2 with kind of short arms so car shifters probably wont work
i built my own with an old 4 speed shifter from a broken 435np and a little heating and bending with a couple small holes drilled and its not as tacky as you would think i personally really liked it since 1st gear was toward the dash and pull it all the way back for park..... but then again i'm poor and i like making my own stuff instead of paying money i don't have for something i can make for almost free
Completely agree with that. Broke teenager is always happy for cheaper things. I just have problems trying to manually shift with the column shift. Do you have any pictures or maybe steps of what you did? I'm guessing no reverse lockout? How do you go between gears?
one 2 1/2-3" long bolt through the floor hump and through the shifter ....a hole about 2 inches long and 3/4 inch wide for movement.... park is toward the seat,1 click up is reverse, then throw it all the way forward your in first rap her up one click back is second then 1 more is drive and all you have to to is bump it forward for passing gear or having fun.....unfortunately no reverse lockout but you learn the shift pattern pretty quick and can do it in your sleep
I imagine it shifts faster than needing to hit a release to shift. So are you saying a cut a hole in the transmission cover large enough to fit the stick in the most extreme positions (park & 1st). Then I drill a hole in the bottom of the shifter that is the same bolt size as the current column linkage and bolt the thing together? Sorry I'm still having a little issues picturing, but I think, maybe I am getting it
forgive the blurriness of the picture only one i had of one of the 3 automatics i did this to (this was my first and worst) if you look there is a hole cut right on the edge of where you see the trans cover area....i will get better pics.... you can't hook directly to it, i made my own linkage from a small like 1/8" or so metal rod and two washers and a little welding.... the main thing was finding just the right angle for the way i made it so it wouldn't cam over and get stuck in gear
I have seen those, although they are a little pricey and i've never seen one used
I have seen one in a 59 F100 with a c6 390 set up. Very sweet! Fit with the bench seat and looked like it was a manual. Ive debated about doing the same to my 59 im currently working on but since stock it was 3 on the tree im going to do 4 on the floor instead because the pedal is still there. But I was about 1 click from ordering one cuz I liked it a lot but decided to get rid of the c6 the PO had swaped in over the factory 3 on tree....
I also have seen and driven a 56 big window with one and was very nice!
Did you shift it while driving (like from 1-2-D) or just from stand stills? If I got something like that it would end up being graduation/birthday gift territory

Yea shifted it as I was driving. Floored it in 1st, let off shift into 2nd, then into Drive. Was fun haha. Smooth too
just remember, every dollar you spend on a floor shifted auto is a dollar that you dont have for a manual tranny swap? Now, if you are happy fabricating stuff, learning to weld( as was suggested above) and learning how to build your own items, this might be a great opportunity???? But, if you will have to buy aftermarket parts, and have a shop do an install, how is your money best spent? im not discouraging you, nor encouraging you, just suggesting you consider cost and time required
Installation is no problem for me, and I would really enjoy making a manual stick work, biggest problem is no one in my area I know has a welder. I might pop the cover of the transmission and see what I could figure out. The manual swap is a little down the road as I do need the truck to be in operation BY August at the latest (worse case scenario type stuff there). Maybe if smoken wouldn't mind posting a picture of the linkage he made, I might be able to give it to a guy at a community/technical college and ask for a little help
