Why don't you just save the money that (you do not have) and your current transmission and wait to buy the correct manual transmission and parts and shifter, then you can go around gear jamming. And wasting gas you can't afford anyway.
Speed shifting a auto is like a great way to blow stuff/out...trans seals or slip it into reverse at the worse moment.
A correct set kick down lever is all you should to go into passing gear. But since gas is to much for you, you do not need to be passing anyone anyway, besides its not a friggin race car, its a truck.
Yea I know, about right now you are saying "Who the hell is this craxy old man", just messing with you. (insert laugh) And at least I did not crack on you about describing yourself like T-Rex in your 1st post.
Sorry had to....there are some after market column to floor shifters (B&M) that are not to badly priced. And here is my heat....do what you gotta do.
Blasted carbon on your dad's ride, to funny.
The only reason I want to go ahead and install a floor shifter is because there will be a time when gas is more available, but time would be at a premium.
Doing the manual swap will take a bit and the truck may not be able to be down for that long. But no problem I understand what you're meanin old man
And sometimes people call me T-Rex Tyler or Tylersaurus Rex. So id understand that
Glad you have a sense of humor. Ok T-Bag (funny) I mean T-rex-rediculaus....ah heck Ok Tyler have you located a manual trans (435 or T-18 ?) and bell housing, pedals and cross member and different length d/s yet?
At least 2wd makes it way easier and are you just going to strip all the sissy auto stuff off the column or go looking for a cha ching $$ actual manual trans steering column?
Down time is a PITA ain't it? Do you have some good JY's over there for parts? We do across the border if you do need something just holler in the FTE Missouri chapter forum.
And you are a Kansas chapter member right? Great way to get parts leads and a helping hand on a project. We might even do a cross border wrench fest, ya just never know?
I've been looking around for the components but without much luck. Anything I have found has either been striped beyond use, isn't fe, or is destroyed. I had a lead on a np435 but it turned out to be destroyed inside, so I passed on it.
Yep I am part of the Kansas chapter. There's not many decent junkyards around here, and most of the classic iron is gone. Its just a waiting game for the right parts and the time, or a complete donor and swap the c6 into it and flip it (but that requires capital
I used a B&M ratchet shifter when I changed the Cruise-o out for a C6 in my 65. I cut the floor panel out over the hump and installed a 4 speed cover plate and raised the shifter to make easy access. I too wanted to put in a 4 speed but with this setup I have completely forgotten about that.
B&Ms aren't the highest quality but for the price ($198) this one operates flawlessly. It has a neutral safety switch and backup light switch also.
I like this setup but when it wears out I think I'll go with a Lokar rig next. I really like the look of them.
I bought a used B&M truck shifter for $75 I think. Works fine. Easy to install, took a lil bit of checking and double checking to get the detents right on the trans.
After that I bought a junkyard manual steering column so it all looks pretty. Very happy with the whole setup.
Don't get too excited about the promatic or a B&M shifter, I got the hurst and couldn't get it to match with the detents no matter what I did, and the same with the B&M, they just have too much slop in their cables. I could get every one but first to second. I think I may have it figured out by making the shifter as sloppy as the cables but haven't tried it yet.
At least these don't pop into reverse from park when you least expect it and that's a good thing!
His idea with the 4speed shifter bolted to the floor pan is actually a good one if you don't get too excited when shifting cause one mistake can get expensive really quick!
ok went to the shop heres my pics and you could make it look a lot nicer than i did.....good luck and i hope this helps.... Park First close up park close up 1st linkage
also if you wanted a already made shifter i highly recommend that you find a pinto (there are a select other few small vehicles had similar ones) and rob the shifter assembly from it they have a nice square footprint and quite a few racers around here use them

Thank you much for the pictures, That makes perfect sense. I could probably build a console that would integrate well into the rest of the truck.
As usual 77&79 has some great advice! you are likely going to spend money repairing things that speed shifting the truck will break, or your gonna spend more money on tires and brake work, from hot rodding it.......Or, while your having fun you get a speeding ticket, your insurance goes up, etc........Cha--Ching. At the very least, see if you can meet up with Smoken, and drive his truck to see if you like it......
Keep in mind one more thing as well, if you do this, plan on either keeping it yourself long term, or do the full manual tranny swap, because the floor shift auto conversion will make the truck near worthless to most people who would buy a 3/4 ton truck. You see lots of people who want a shortbed 1/2 ton, particularly a Flareside/Stepside thats been hotrodded, but hardly anyone looking at a 3/4 looks for this........
Yeah right now its the mature side of the brain arguing with the kid side of my brain. I'll have to do some more thinking as well as a pros and cons list. Of course if I need that extra 1/10th of a second that bad, I might need to reconsider why I bought a truck.
best $250 you'll spend.
sure, power shifting is not great for your trans, but you physically can't mis a shift with the winters shifters. i like to drive around selecting gears manually in the dirt, it just lets you lock a gear and keeps the trans from hunting and slipping all over the place. if its good enough for a trophy truck, its good enough for your beater.
nice try but no one drives my truck iggybob because i have had to many friends destroy my stuff and not reimburse and B the truck in photo is sitting at the shop with no dizzy and no carb and only runs on about 5 cylinders due to valve guide seals breaking apart and clogging motor with crud and wiping a few cam lobes.....
