E4OD Shifts Smoother While Cold
truck has 98,xxx by the way...
I ask because when it warms up the computer allows the torque converter to lock up in 3rd and 4th gear. You may just be feeling the torque converter locking up, because Ford basically stacks 4th gear and lock up right on top of each other. I have a shift kit in mine and when it's cold it shifts the exact same for every gear, but when it warms up and shifts into 4th gear it's definitely the most firm because lock up coming in. Just a thought. You could also run the codes to see if you have any trans related ones.
Under normal acceleration mine is bad, but under moderately heavy acceleration sometimes its not too bad.
Kinda feels like it shifts twice and that the tranny is acting up, but that's just the way they are... You do get used to it eventually...
The 98-02 Superdutys with the 4R100 has a good sized stacked plate cooler, and then the 5R110W has a cooler that's literally TWICE the size of the 4R's.

When you see a cooler like either of these, you know something is generating some heat.

TCC unlocks for shift OD, unlocks to soften the shift. It happens during the shift, unlocked|locked again but done in that split second takes to upshift, its nothing you'd feel happening. Just feel like single shift, no double hit kinda deal nothing like that, one shift into OD.
Early model would have done the same but for shift to 3rd gear too, unlock|lock for shift to 3rd and to OD but again nothing you'd feel it doing.
Talking normal acceleration speeds too, not taking off granny style but not like taking part in a drag race either just normal acceleration, increase in ground speed to point cause trans to upshift.
If its not operating like that than sounds like something may be amiss, if as bad as you make it sound? Find the problem and correct it be a worth while undertaking for both ride comfort as well as trans health. "Embarrassment factor" in there too of course, poorly shifting trans can have wide range of effects! Engine falls on face just at the wrong moment and all because it shifted when it shouldn't have....or didn't would it should have etc...
