My friends we'll pump quit Saturday. The house was built in the late sixties. It has a 3 wire pump with a control box. The breaker was blown and when he turned it back on there was arcing at the control box so he shut it off. The arcing was coming from where the ground was attached to the control box, it was not connected securely, just touching, thus the racing instead of popping the breaker, I suppose. The capacitor was coming apart but it was not burnt looking or smelling. I had continuity on (I believe) all 3 wires going to the pump. I did not see a fourth ground wire from the pump. I took the cover from my 3/4 hp we'll pump's control box with the cap and relay and plugged it in to try it. It made a high pitch humming noise but the pump didn't run. Pretty sure the pump is locked up or the motor is bad.
So here's my question(s). Have I missed something in my testing, like using a control box for 3/4 hp on a 1/2 hp pump? Any reason we can't use a two wire pump as it is a bit cheaper than a 3 wire and a control box?
You can fix that by clicking the EDIT button, go ADVANCED, and you can remove all the apostrophes from the contraction of the two words "we" and "will" that form the contraction "we'll" and you'll have the word you meant to use, that being "well."

If the capacitor is bad it won't start, deep well pumps have a huge startup load. It should have two hots and a ground, the pump is 220v with no need for the 110v a neutral allows.
If that's the original pump, there's a good chance that it's shot.
You might call your local well guy and check out his rates -- they might be more reasonable than you think. If nothing else, he can probably sell you the right capacitor.
