Looking good JP! Nothing is loctited. I can't see the deal you are talking about on the crank. Make sure the oil pickup is tightly mounted, I loctite this. I don't know how its mounted on these motors though.
How many miles are on this motor? I can't remember and don't want to look back. Maybe its just me, but if I'm inside a motor I at least want to see how the bearings look for my piece of mind. If there are not a lot of miles I'm sure they are fine, but I like to know. Not saying you have to do this, just saying.
199k on the clock, Darin. I see what you mean about taking a peak at the mains. if I just unbolt and re-bolt (to proper torque), I suppose that can't really hurt anything, huh?
take one off, look at it, put it back on. then do the next one, huh?
certainly would be good peace (piece?) of mind to know they're good as new...
With those miles and you not tearing it down any farther, if you don't see any discoloration from excessive heat in or around the rods/rod journals, and mains I'd say slam her together and go!
You won't hurt anything doing what you are saying, but you should look at both halves of the bearings. You could probably roll the upper half around the crank and get it out, but unless you notice anything like i mentioned I think I'd just go with it.
Crap, I had an answer all typed out and lost it! I hate that! ...losing post like that. As for discolorations, there are definitely none to be seems around the mains or connecting rods. The only evidence I came find that the engine is not brand new (other than the rust all over the outside of it :-) ) is a faint line over the cam lobes from the lifters. Not purply or bluish like work hardening, more like just slightly more polished than the surrounding metal. Other than that, everything looks like brand newly machined steel (and aluminum). I'll look it over once more real good, but otherwise clean up the outside and get to reassembly!
Darin, i have no response to that one. Bill, a very good point, but I figure if I'm going to have a say over the stuff that she spends money on, I better play it both ways. I went with the approach of burying her with detail on parts costs, and then comparing my ~$3500 budget to this: 7.3L Stock/Performance Engine - Swamp's Diesel Performance
instead of listening to me drone on and on about injectors and valve springs and turbo pedestals, much as I expected, she broke down after about 5 minutes and said, "fine, just go ahead and do it."

to which I said, "ok, if you insist."
:-)
Sounds like you have that routine down pretty good! LOL!! My wife used to fuss about my truck stuff, but she just doesn't even care anymore. Any money that I spend on my trucks doesn't come from my paycheck or take anything away from the household. It is all from money that I make on the side doing odd jobs, selling parts, hauling junk, etc., so she doesn't say anything.
I just 'do it' and never tell her. So at RRE, I hope nobody starts talking mods and costs, LOL IDK, she is getting a lot like Bills wife, she stopped caring, she knows its a losing battle.
