My truck sometimes has a hard shift into second gear before it get thoughly warmed up. After not being driven for some time the intial first-second shift is rough depending on how much throttle is applied before/while it's shifting. I want to run this trans for as long as it will go and for the amount of miles on the truck it's very smooth. Fluid level and color is great. Whats the best thing for me to do to make the most miles out of it?

What is the service history, type of fluid in it, miles and year of truck? You don't give much info for people to work with.
I just picked the 03 F250 up almost a month ago. It's got a few thousand over 200K. I haven't heard much about the external filter, but now that you mention it I'll look into it. Probably not a big deal with the shifting as it's got to be expected with so many miles on it. If it gets to 300K I'll be happy as can be ( the trans that is).
I took the truck to see if all the recalls were done at Ford and it turns out that a programming recall for shift points was needed. We'll see if that helps.
