In my personal experience, ignition modules just die. I have heard of bad modules manifesting as erratic idle or hard starting especially when warm. But I have only had them just die and the result is no spark...period.
I just found out that was a recall on them thru FORD. My mechanic who worked at the local Ford dealship said it was because they failed and when they did they sometimes caused the truck to burn the ground.
The recall is for the TFI ignition module that fits on the distributor. The older fender mount ignition module fails also but the OEM modules seem to hold up well. Buy replacement MotorCarft modules, the other aftermarket modules are junk. Mount the MotorCraft unit on 1/4" spacers to allow cooling air under the module. I don't know of any good fix for the TFI module. I have seen a lot of TFI modules fail due to improper heatsink prep and installation.
The "burning to the ground" problem was an ignition switch problem if I remember right, not the ignition module.
i was thinking about pulling out the whole igniton system and replacing it with the old style points and condenser. how do i do that, or would it be cheap to put a new iginition system aftermarket or whatever. please help i missing mudding in my truck
