This is a question that puzzles me. b4hntn, I know you have had the warning in your signature for some time now and it am interested in exploring what the real differences are in the connector wiring between the two modules. Is it merely that the pin-out is different?
Furthermore, I would really be interested to know if the issue is ONLY a configuration problem or if the black modules generate a different signal/data all together. I mean the engines that both modules "drive" aren't dis-similar so I wonder if there is a way to determine the full extent of the differences between the two.
In short, do you or does anyone else know these answers?
Determining this could help owners like you and tygarcia considering the scarcity of these modules.
I dont have an aswer, but an addition to your question...Why are the wires in different order on a new module...ie., I think mine goes black, orange, purple, red (may not be exact) and the one at my local parts shop is orange, black, red, purple. Same color wires, different order coming out of the box, also the white and red that are on the far left are also switched on the new one. Whats up with that?
Cope, This is what I want to figure out. The way I see it, if it is merely a difference of configuration, you should be able to re-arrange the configuration of wires in the harness connector and use the newer module in place of the old one. However, unless I can find a way to verify that the ONLY difference is the wire configuration and not something more critical like the voltages or actual signal stream, there is no way to safely (without causing damage to other parts of the ignition system) be certain that simply swapping the wiring configuration will work.
No one has ever been able to show me the internal diagram of the modules. But I have been told a retard funtion was built into the early module. I have wiring diagrams for all three if anyone wants, I will post.
the motor in my bronco came from a 93 F150 (351w). But it has been converted to a cast iron intake and holley 4bbl, and they left the serp belt. My bronco originaly had the 300 6. The shop that did the wireing was sketchy to say the least (work was done before I got the truck) ...Im not sure if things like the module, voltage regulator, starter soleniod and harness were changed, or if they ran the old 6 as this is my first gas ford truck..im not sure what im looking at really.
The unit pictured on that page is an old Duraspark unit. If you have diagrams of the internals for the black and grey modules, I would love to see them.
Go through this thread. Has diagrams along with wiring info and explanations of the differences between the "push start" (gray, TFI controlled dwell) and CCD (Black, computer controlled dwell).
