Fuel Leak

I have a fuel leak on my 2002 Excursion 7.3. It is on the passenger side and it is dripping from the bottom bolt on the starter. I am taking it to the Ford dealer tomorrow and was wondering what it could be? It only leaks after i start it for a short while after sitting overnight and stops once I take it for a drive. Thanks.

The engine Valley drain hole is on that side of the motor so it really could be anything leaking into the valley. My first guess would be the fuel bowl drain valve.

Don't take it to to dealership just yet. Do check your drain valve, it's probably leaking indeed. But your problem could easily be the fuel supply line running from the fuel bowl to the passenger side cylinder head. It'll drip directly onto the starter motor. You'll probably need a telescopic mirror to check things out, but just trace it out and you'll find it way back in front of the turbo down pipe.
Cold side CAC pipe will need to come off for repair. I just did this repair yesterday, please don't hesitate to ask questions.

X2 on what Jason said. My friend had the exact same symptoms and he replaced the O-rings on his fuel bowl drain valve and the problem went away.

You can get the entire valve...

Genuine Ford 7.3L Diesel Fuel Bowl Drain Valve F81Z-9A153-AA

or the O-ring kit and rebuild it yourself.

Please post your findings. I have the same issue. I'm wondering about cost and ease of repair. It was -6 degrees this morning at my house. Not too excited about doing a repair in that kind of cold.

Here is a write up about replacing the o-rings on the valve if you determine its leaking from there.

There is another leak that you can get from the hard line rubbing through on the passenger side but this one usually pours out tons of fuel.

Here is posting mentioning it.

Well, I looked around an could not find the leak, so I took it to the Ford shop. That was a bad idea. All they wanted to do is replace the turbo because the pedestal leaks oil some. Drips about a quart every 5000 miles. They did not even look for the fuel leak. So, now I got to figure out what to do about the fuel leak. I guess I might just replace that fuel line going to the passenger head.

Go ahead and do the fuel bowl seals and the fuel line at the same time. Make sure to slip a piece of rubber hose around the fuel line for extra cushioning and longer future life on the hard tubing.

FIRST, though, get a mirror on an extension handle and check around the back side of the fuel bowl while the engine is running. Be sure to look all around because the black housing to the left of the drain valve also has o-rings in it which can leak. If you don't see anything there, then trace the fuel line on the passenger head about half way back and see if you can spot any forced leakage from there. Again, do this while the system is under pressure with the engine running. Otherwise, you probably don't have enough pressure in the system for the leak to be obvious.

There are also a few other potential leak points... the seal on the pressure regulator housing, the compressible sleeves on the fuel lines connecting to the fuel bowl, the o-o-ring on the lid of the fuel bowl, just to name a few more... Regardless, they are all around the fuel bowl area (except the hard passenger fuel line).
