This is the only place on FTE I can ask this question. Anywhere else I might get flamed. When I bought my truck it already had this poorly done PS conversion. It uses a Saginaw PS box with a casting number of 7802644. It has the big "S" Saginaw logo on one side and a big number 4 to the left of that. I was under the impression that these boxes were used in ~1975-1985 or maybe later GM 4WD's and maybe in some Dodges. I don't have the time or resources to redo this correctly right now, but I need to replace the seals which are leaking badly and are the cause of all the mess you see in the thread linked to above. So I got everything off and cleaned up, and I noticed that where the steering sector shaft comes out of the box, it looks like someone has beat the crap out of it with a hammer.
The old seals came out alright, but a new seal will not go in without tearing it up. So I found another box, same number, looks exactly the same, with Chevy 85 written on the side.
I'm looking for a complete seal kit but I'm not sure what year I'm looking for. There is a pretty distinct seal for the steering sector shaft cover for this box. What's confusing to me is that the only kits I've seen with this seal are for 97-99 models. Do y'all have any sources where I can make sure I'm getting the right kit? Or maybe I should just go ahead and tear it down so I can eyeball everything? Also, what's the best way to clean out the inside of the box if it's all gunked up? I guess I don't want to use anything too corrosive in there.
