Cold start problems

Hey gang. I've read some of the other cold start issues and I've been doing some research. When it gets below 20 out, the truck is a real bear to start. It's like trying to start an old Detroit. I was thinking glow plugs were bad, but I'm not so sure now. It blows a lot of black smoke on start up. I'm thinking I may have a stuck injector. I changed fuel filters recently and that had no effect. They were about 6k mi past due. After about 5 minutes warming up, it's alright, and now that it's been warmer out, it starts up ok. Over 40, no problem. I've had this truck 3 years and it's always been alright even really cold. Now it won't even make power til you warm it up for 5 or 10 minutes. What are your thoughts, and how can I check for bad injectors? I may have to have it diagnosed. The truck wasn't optioned with a block heater by the original owner...

Many other threads say All 6.0 have a heater. Some just didn't come with the plug.

Hokiewheeler look on passenger side just above the the starter and u should see the blocker heater, now they may or may not come with the pig tail. You can get one thru amazon for less then the dealer price. Also if u have a full connection go to the front of the truck near hooks and u might see it.

Haven't checked the FICM. Is it possible to check the voltage on it without a diagnostic tool?

I have never done it but it is possible. The procedure is in the tech folder. You need a DVM. and an assistant.

If I get to it tomorrow I will post up some results. I may go pick up one of those scan gauges.

I don't have a block heater on the truck at all. I got a 1500w space heater that I was setting on the front diff by the oil pan to get it to start. At any rate, I finally took it in to the shop. Bad FICM - they got me for 1200 bucks for the job, new part was 788 with a 200 core. They f'd me on the part from what I can see, Ford wants 598 for a programmed one.
