I have a 73 xlt with a 390 engine it has a 3.70 posi rear end. I want to replace the 3 speed C6 transmission or is it possible to make the original C6 an overdrive transmission? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The only way to make a C6 an overdrive transmission is to add a Gearvendors overdrive unit which is expensive.
The FE series (390) engines have a unique bell housing bolt pattern so there is no off the shelf overdrive tranny that will bolt up.
There are adapters that will allow you to bolt one up but they too are expensive.
I would say that you're looking at close to $1,000 minimum for overdrive, that'll buy a lot of gas.
I checked on the price for the gear vender, your right mike that is steep. Right now the truck sounds really wound up tight at 80 mph, I just want more top end out of the beast. The truck has a lot of sentimental value to me because it was my fathers but I can't rob a bank to make it an every day driver like I want. The motor used to be a 360 , my dad changed changed it to the 390.

I completely understand sentimental value, or as I spell it, $entimental. I'm currently pouring a butt load of money into my '73 because of it .
I did what DeepRoots suggested. I had Broader Performance build me a C6 with the wide ratio option and have a 3.00:1 rear.
The wide ratio gearset comes from the E40D.
