anyone know of a doubler kit for a b-w 1356/e40d? i searched the world wide webber, yet found nothing. most sites i found talked about mating a 203box to a 205, but i couldnt find if they would mount to an e40d. i dont want to go c6 because i drive the truck every day and dont want to lose od. any advice or insight would be great.
Many reasons for the doubler, one of which is to eliminate any chain driven transfer cases. The only part of the 203 that is used with the 203/205 combo is the range box. This only allows hi, or low range selection before it gets to the 205 case. The back half of the 203 is used now for real important stuff, like collecting dust, and getting in the way around the shop.
Now, the 203 case should bolt up just like your B/W case, with a 6 hole round adapter, just like the 205. I also believe that the 1356 has a 31 spline input shaft. This means it will bolt up to your existing trans, so you can keep the overdrive.
You will have to do the normal stuff like making the crossmember, and making or buying shifters, (plural especially if you twin stick the 205.)
You will also decide on whether or not you install a 3:1 kit in the range box, giving you a possible 6:1 total output. Lots of choices here.
Do you really want to do this to a DD? This is a pretty extreme modification for pretty extreme trucks that don't usually get driven to work, and the grocery store. O.K beer runs for sure, but not too many daily drivers with this combo.
i know its a little much for a daily driver, but you do still keep the same high range ratio, so i wouldnt lose drivability, i would just gain a better crawl ratio.
you said the 203 will bolt to my tranny, but will it match up to a 1356?
i just checked out their site and it looks like a good option.
my truck isn't running high hp or torque, which is why i want to try a doubler setup, so i can retain reasonable fuel mileage, but be able to crawl well. do you think the effective low range would be too much for the stock driveline?
also do you run one? if so, pros? cons?
thanks for your help.
I dont have one, but one of my brothers freinds has one on his bronco. I have never drove the truck but rode many times, but he says its the best thing he boudgt for the truck. I will ask him for some more info.
