U have a 93 f350 with the dana 60(dually) and noticed the front lockouts stopped working. I checked all the front u joints and they are still tight, front driveshaft seems to be kicking in and spinning transfercase works in all gears. Any ideas?
I'll bet you have auto hubs.. which are well known to fail. Also note it's much more common for the U-joints in the front axle to seize up from lack of use than to wear to a sloppy loose condition, and a seized outer U-joint can interfere with hub locking.
I have manual hubs. I did jack it up with 4 lo and hubs locked in and both axles are spinning freely. Any way of checking each lockout?
Not real clear, picked up one wheel tried them individually? or did both at same time, had them both off the ground then tried spinning the wheel?
If you're gonna do it that way you want one wheel off the ground both lockouts locked, try to spin the wheel in the air.
Problem with that test is if only one fails to lock either wheel would spin.
Lock the lockouts, reach around inside the wheel turn its axle shaft at the u joint, the hub should lock before you make the axle spin one full revolution. It might take more but should lock right in fairly quick and hear it when it does too.
Do the same test both sides, lock hub turn its axle shaft by hand.
If one or both fail to lock remove the lockout cap, you could find anything from missing parts to water damage, spring and or gear missing (say if its a "new to you truck") and or rust/corrosion preventing the gear from sliding freely in and out.
If find all gummed up take them all apart clean the parts and inspect for damage. Lightly grease gears/bearings/splines putting all parts back together, do not pack the lockout full of grease, medium light coating is all that is required.
If you live in the rust belt you might have to drill out the cap screws to remove the lockout cap, if find you do drill the heads out but do not damage the cap in the process. They caps are pricey a hardware kit with new caps screws is not.
Little RTV prevents that from happening again.....if you live in the rust belt....
I did try it with both wheels off the ground and one at a time. Also, i did get the to lock iN earlier. But i still dont hear them clicking in or anything.
