If they are auto hubs, then here is my suggested procedure..

1) Remove hubs from Truck.
2) Hold hub securely in Hand.
3) Reach back with hand (still holding hub)
4) throw Hub as far as you can.
5) Replace with Manual hubs (around $60.00)

6) enjoy worry free 4X4 again.

Seriously, If you have auto hubs, then almost surely, they are the problem.

You can test it by putting the truck in 4X4 and having someone observe the Front Driveshaft when you are moving. If the Driveshaft turns, but the 4X4 doesn't engage, then the hubs are the culprit.

If the Driveshaft does not turn (unlikely) then the transfer case is not engaging.

If you already have Manual hubs, then jack up the front end and spin the wheels by hand. You should feel the difference when you lock the hubs (when ulocked, you are only spinning tire. When locked, you are spinning tire and axle.)

already have manual hubs(73 250), and i know that it is either the hubs or something broken inside, but i have already had the hubs out, and they were just fine. it is a dana 44 and im running 33's on truck thats obviously been a farm truck most of its life (i have only had it a little over a month) but the drivers hub doesn't "click" like all the others that i have seen
