checking the oil
Always check the engine oil with the motor off.
Check tranny fluid with the engine running for at least 5 minutes as the Torque Convertor has fluid in it and you want to get an accurate measurement of ALL the fluid in the system (fluid will change when it gets warm).
Hoping that helps...
I prefer to check oil in the morning before I start up. If I have been driving, I like to let the engine sit for a few minutes, like when you stop for gas, wait until you are almost filled up before checking the oil.
Wipe the dip stick well and check the oil, then wipe and check again.
Good Luck,

Just read an interesting article in Trailer Life mag, I think one of the summer issues, that talks about checking things on trucks. Jeez who but us would think checking oil is interesting?
Anyway, I guess there are some people out there who don't know the basics so they were trying to cover everything. Be sure you are on level ground. Be sure to push the dipstick in all the way. Don't let the dipstick touch any dirt, and wipe it if you do. Try to keep the level between the marks. A quarter inch or so high isn't killer, below can be killer.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson
No prob....I was just joshin ya'''..it sure beats other things I've been called !!
Indeed, we all have to start somewhere...it seems only a few years ago (it's really been 30!!...) when I was at the GM Training Center in Altanta training to overhaul Pontiac 326 & 389 engines.... I had a leaking water pump and didn't even know how to fix it. A little earlier than that, my father was on the ground with me showing me how to change the oil on a '64 VW. Boy, THOSE were the days....
This is a good forum for us "elders" to now get down on the ground and help other needy people just like our fathers did us..... right?
