Switch out a 5.4 in a F-250 4X4 4 my neighbor now I have a noise like fan blades hitting coming from the torque converter it goes and comes and hits good in reverse
What was the reason for the switch out, could the bad motor damaged the torque converter, Also did you visibly check the flexplate to make sure there were no cracks in it?
No, I was lucky enough to get asked if I know what is wrong after the motor was swap out They told me they had a hard time getting the motor and trans to mate up they had both of them together and did knot have the TC studs going thru the flex plate so they loosen both of them and got them lined up. Sounds like metal is just litely scraping it comes and goes with rpm scrapes more reverse then drive. thanks for your advice
Did the torque converter seat properly? You need to spin it and push it- it clicks in like three times. If you don't have it in all the way it could be causing issues. Although- if the engine is bolted up, i'm not sure it would be making those sounds. I once bolted the engine together with the torque converter not seated properly and cracked the transmission pump- lol.
It's not always there and it sounds just like a metal fan blade just barley hitting something I put in drive u could barley hear it put it in reverse a lot louder. I drove the truck around the block and it shift ok. That's what I was trying to find out if a crack flex-plate would sound like this. THANKS use all the help I could get right now
Nothing changes in the torque converter between drive and reverse , the only thing that changes is the direction of the thrust on the trans mounts and the motor mounts. I think you are going to be stuck pulling the trans to see whats going on..
Slide under the truck and listen for any sounds while rotating the motor by hand. Maybe you can get lucky and hear where it's coming from. If you haven't already solved it by now that is.
I had the exact same thing happen to me when I pulled the trans in my wife's Jeep Wrangler. I had to replace the front trans seal. When I got it all back together I had the same noise issue. I was pulling my hair out because I didn't want to pull all that driveline again.
It ended up being the crank sensor pickup that inserts into the top side of the trans bellhousing was pushed in too far and the flywheel was just grazing it. There was some play in the depth of the sensor mount, so I loosened it and pulled it out a eighth inch and retightened it.
No idea where the crank sensor goes in the 5.4 since I've never pulled one, but maybe it's something similar?
