The good news is…my truck drives straight down the highway and only goes where I point it. The bad news…is leaking oil out the input shaft. Not much, just a drop/minute at idle without turning the wheel. Just enough to be annoying and make a mess. I called Redhead, they put me on hold for less than a minute, then told me my new gear box would be shipped out tomorrow. I offered to try a seal first if they would send me one, they said "No Sir, we want that unit back to troubleshoot why that leak happened". So…sux that this happened, however, I think the measure of a man,(or a company),is what he does to correct his mistakes. They are trying to make this right by me.
That is customer service. Good for sure, but maybe not quite as good as Amazon did for me today. I'd ordered a new dizzy - for $19.38. It was guaranteed to have been delivered last Saturday, but still hasn't been delivered. So Amazon extended my Prime membership a month and gave me a $15 credit. So, in effect, they paid me $2.20 to take the dizzy. And if it doesn't come tomorrow another one is on its way.
In any event, you are absolutely right - we all make mistakes and it is just a question of how we deal with them.
New box finally installed today, along with a new rag joint. OMG! It's like night and day difference! I cant even describe it accurately. Not only the steering, but how it handles and less vibration and jarring in the steering. A lot smoother and straight as an arrow. I should have done this years ago. Thanks for arranging this group buy!
This is how mine worked out: $266 for the box, $45 for UPS shipping and $125 for core charge. I shipped my old box back this week and I expect to receive a refund of $125 (core)+$40 (group buy discount)=$165. If your box is $300 or more, then you get a $50 discount.
I know that in Dec 2012 we had enough to get me a $60 discount .... I think we had 36 or 38 .... and my core charge (I think mine was $150?) was quickly refunded when I sent my old one back after swapping, I sent it back for about $15 in the largest "If it fits it ships" USPS box. Lots of tape, padded, reinforced box corners, and etc.
Thanks for the pricing input. My timing was off the last buy, but certainly a future interest. I went through the dvd shop manual and it looks like quite an exercise to change out the box. Can anyone comment on their personal experience. Is there any special tools needed to release the pressure in a power steering system?
The hardest part for me was getting a pitman arm puller. Other than that, it's easy stuff with not much to go wrong. It gives you a chance to inspect the rest of the steering system, like your U-joint and rag joint.
It's also a great time to consider a drip pitman arm if you have a lift, since it'll be off anyhow.
I used a little bit of vacuum hose to siphon as much fluid out of the can as I could to reduce what I'd have to try to collect as it was pouring out of a hose and an orifice at the same time, but a golf tee jammed into the hose can help that problem too.
If your vehicle is anything like the standard truck I've seen, you shouldn't have any corrosion issues from all the old oil dripped all over the place.
