I've heard a lot of trucks make an annoying tick with a bad exhaust gasket. However, if you have a tick- you shouldn't assume it's the exhaust gasket. Pretty easy to hear where the tick is coming from.
I completely agree about assuming it's the gasket. If the rpms are up it gets a bit louder. Once the rpms settle back down the tick gets faint. Correct me if I'm wrong if it was something internal to the engine it's self wouldn't it stay the same. And any suggestions to diagnosing this problem would be much appreciated.

A loose spark plug sounds much like an exhaust manifold leak
This is the first thing you should rule out since they are known to
blow out
good luck and keep us posted
Could be an easy fix have you checked your manifold bolts for proper torque/broken/missing as well as intake/throttle body bolts. to rule out exhaust have one person by the side that is ticking and have another person place a piece of 2x4 over entire end of the exhaust pipe for a moment and listen for the sound to increase or stay the same. If it stays the same look else-ware
