Yesterday I was working at my part-time job, working at Sam's Club putting on tires when a gentlemen in his mid 30's asked about tires for his 92' Ford Exploder.
Any way I looked up the sizes and we got to talking about Fords and such, we he made this statement...."I dunno why my Exploder is called a Ford since it is made by Mitsubishi and is a Montero with a Ford Badge!"?
Say what??
I didn't say anything as I did not want to upset the customer into not buying tires (but I really wanted to though, and should have...).
After he left I joking ly told another guy I work with who also bleeds Ford blue, and he said, "Yep that's right, the explorer is a montero with a ford badge!".?
Needless to say I was dumbfounded. I proceeded to state that the Mazda Navajo is a ford explorer with a Mazda Badge, and not a montero, He looked at me like I was the biggest dolt.
I guess some people just know alot about nothing....or really set in their beliefs.
Mybe their right I got lots of foriegn parts in my 94 including mazda tranny the other ranger tranny is a mitsu which is junk. Actually anything made after 79 by any of the big 3 is junk
Ya, car companies are really weird with a lot of that kind of stuff. Like for instance, My friend has a 1995 eagle talon (the eclipse clone). He just recently told me that the chrysler sebring has the same exhaust system, tranny and engine layout as the eclipse and talons of his year. That's pretty crazy. He even went on to speculate that the chassis would not be all that dissimilar.
You were right about the mazda/ford thing. But i have to dis agree with round lights. They started getting things back together around the early 90's in my opinion. But if you go to the junkyard, most of the vehicles are 80-90 models from chevy (buick, olds, etc), and mostly from chrysler (incl. dodge, plymoith, etc). and as much as I hate to admit it, there are even some blue ovals out there. The big 3 hated what was going on with the emmisions and computers, (well, except chrysler, the government had just saved their butts), so they went along kicking and screaming, making poor cars along the way....
Ford completely designed and engineered the explorer, mitsu had nothing to do with it. Several Ford products are sold as Mazdas and vice versa.
Yes Detroit, got completely lost in the early 70s and it did take them until the late 80s to figure out what the heck was going on. All the more they made were big ugly land yachts that no one really wanted. Then they tried to make all economy cars and people wanted them then, but no one will touch them with a ten foot pole now.

Right! Ford has never dealt with Mitsubishi. However, Chrysler has, similar to Ford and Mazda. The Dodge Raider that was made for a few years was a rebadged Montero(this is back at least a decade...). My mom used to have a 91 Plymouth Laser which was the same as the Eagle Talon and Mitsu Eclipse. But the Explorer being made by Mitsu... they're smoking crack!
remember the dodge raiders that had the tip gauges in the dash so you knew if you were getting too close to rolling in a corner....LOL...good ol days of tall skinny suvs
Every U.S. auto maker sat with their head in the sand during the early 70s and just let the imports take over and when they did try to come out with small cars, the were just junk so all of the big 3 scrambled to marry a jap. They all sold thinly veiled imports under their own name while they re-invented the wheel with their own offerings. The good old boy"bigger is better" thinking died hard but by 1980 the down size had taken place. The cars were still junk, but smaller junk. Then they refused to let the carburator die a dignified death and kept it alive on an iron lung for several years. Even the first fuel injection wasn't much more than a glorified carburator.
Even though todays cars have Coors can sheet metal and reek of cheesy plastic crap, they are still the most dependable cars ever made. Plus performance is back and we no longer have to drive wheezing anemic cars.
You can basically thank the japs for backing the big 3 into a corner or they would still be feeding us bloated wallowing sedans with 0-60 times you could measure with a sun dial.
Okay gang.... I've asked three times this week. This forum is is factual technical comparision of Ford's products to its competitors. For instance, comparing the performance or braking of an F150 to a Silverado.
I will not ask another time. One more off-topic post and the offender will find themselves booted and this forum section will be closed for good. Don't test me on this, I'm serious.
Sorry, I just got on to a thread titled So what? and jumped into the fray. didn't realize I was breaking the rules and wasn't here for any earlier warnings. Where can we take this topic so it doesn't upset anyone?
