351w, the rest will require changine the tranny. Any engine swap (besides 289,302) will require different accessory brackets, motor mounts and exhaust routing.
Since a 4spd has a removable bell housing, you may be able to just bolt on the corresponding bell housing and swap in any motor - not sure though. Do some searches about it in this and the corresponding engine forums - this has been done many times in the past.
i think a well built 351w would make you happy, that way you wouldn't have to worry about bellhousings and such, even though a bellhousing swap isn't that big of a deal. But if you just want something else, aka 390, 460, whatever, nothing's impossible.
For that real "nght to day" feeling, I would suggest to get up into the bigger cubes. I did a different family swap once and it was a bit of a hassle going to all the junk yards to find the engine mounting brackets etc (I started with a bare engine), but in your case, you're allready spending a decent sum to go up from a 302 to a 351, why not really pump it up?. The 400 and 460 would be my first choices because lots of tourqe for low dollars. Might lean towards the 400, lots lighter, and lots of them out there. Whatever you go to, I bet if you are patient or have a good relationship with your local junk yard you can get a good core engine AND all the associated hardware out of one truck. Oh, yea, the 4x4 has a different oil pan than 2WD, to best of my knowlege. GL
the 351 will be the easiest swap. even though you have a 4spd tranny Most of the splines on the Piolet Shaft are different for the Big block motors. If I was going to do a swap With the setup you've got, I'd either go with the 351W easiest or the 300 I6 for the great TQ they hav e stock and the Monster TQ they can produce if built. The only change needed to swap the I6 would be the frame molunts and motor mounts. You'll lack in HP compared to a V-8. But the Pull is Whats needed in a 4wd. I'd dump the 400M in my 78 or my 351M in my 79 bronco for a good I6 anytime.
