So I am looking at buying a rebuilt e40d. I see a lot of them listed and they all have model ranges. Is there a difference between the model years? I am guessing the bell housing bolt pattern? Id like to get one updated with the newer hardparts that were not available in 90. Am I limited to a particular model range? (outside of a diesel truck) Mines gas, I dont want to assume any gas e40d will work.
Diesel E4ODs can only bolt to diesels. 460 E4ODs can only bolt to 460s. 300, 302 and 351 E4ODs are interchangeable.
The '95 E4OD was a big improvement over previous versions. The '96 and '97 models were better yet. You can use a '95 - '97 model E4OD, but you must swap out the solenoid pack for one out of a '94 or earlier model or else you will damage the computer.
Hey sorry not trying to hijack the thread but I did see something here similar to my problem. I just got a 1990 f250 5.8 e4od. The po said when he got the truck it wouldn't shift out of first gear so he bought a transmission out of a running, driving truck that the engine burnt in. They swapped the dipstick and tube off the old one because the old one got hot in the fire and burned the handle off the stick. The part number on the old stick which was in the bed points to a 1996. When I first got the truck the tranny shifted thru all gears. It didn't get more than 2 miles on it when I found a tranny line kinked. I unlinked the line and straightened it up. Now when you start it up and put it in gear it will go but as soon as you switch gears it won't do anything and makes a whining noise in park and neutral. I pulled codes and got two. Tot sensor and electronic pressure control circuit failure. Could this be due to them not swapping solenoid packs?
