The door "bonger"

The "plonging" noise that sounds every time you open the driver side door with the keys in, lights on, whatever. Seems to be an epedemic all american cars (and some others) have been burdened with.

What's the best way of getting rid of it?
Passing by/disconnecting the switch in the door is obviously the easy fix, but of course this messes up the interior light aswell wich isn't an option. Without having checked i presume the bonger isn't the only thing on its particular fuse either.
Does it mabye have its own speaker or is it wired to the radios speakersystem?

Someone must have removed it at some point, what's the best & easiest way of getting at it? It's driving me murderous!

Yep.. that's the first thing I disconnect when I get one of these trucks. The module for it is up under the center of the dash, just reach up there and unplug it.. job done.

I couldn't get mine unplugged, so I stuck a screwdriver thru it. No more "bong-bong-bong"!

I actually don't mind the warning for the lights but the key chime is stupid. If all you want is to get rid of the key/door warning then just pull the lock cylinder out of the ignition and pull off the single wire attached to the brass contact on the side of it. Insulate the end of the wire and put it back together. Takes all of 30 seconds and it'll never make another sound when the keys are in with the door open.

EDIT: if you have a bricknose (like your avatar shows) then it might be different. The 92-96 trucks can have that wire removed, not sure bout the previous generation.

I haven't ever pulled the lock cylinder out, is that an easy thing to do? I'll be doing this before the day is over.

Easy as putting the key in, turning it to RUN, and using a small screwdriver or straight pick to push up on the release pin thru the access hole under the ignition switch. Pull the entire lock cylinder straight out, and the only wire that's attached to it is the one you want to disconnect. Insulate the end so it doesn't ground out or else the chime will come on.

I don't have a picture of the release pin but if you look underneath where the screw holes are for the column trim, you'll see another hole with no screw in it underneath where the key goes. The little pin in there has to be pushed up and held there while removing the cylinder... a skinny screwdriver works pretty good.

The previous owner of my truck took it out from under the dash at some point. I thought it was no big deal as surely I am "with it" enough to not forget my lights are on when I get out of the truck. Well, 3 dead batteries and jumps later have led me to believe that I am losing it! I actually went to the junk yard to pick one up and plugged it back in. Haven't left the lights on since!!

But alas there are tons of connectors under the dash and not one is obvious it's this thing. Most seems to have way to many pins for something like this... :/

Dunno if this was said yet but on the door or doors that bong when open... Pull the dome light switch out and disconnect the one wire for the door ajar. Theres 3 wires on driver door by default and 2 on every other door normally. Ground, dome, ajar

The "bonger" as you say is called a "chime" by Ford.
