temperature gauge

For some reason the temperature gauge in my 96 f150 is goin up and down pretty drastically. I've checked both the antifreeze and the oil and they're fine, anyone have an idea what it could be?

Is this in city driving? If so, it could be that when you are going slow or stopped the fan behind your radiator isn't pulling the air through the radiator. When you get up to a certain speed, the motion of the truck will push the air through the radiator. This is just one possibility as to what the problem may be.

Is this a new development or has it done it for a while? And how drastic is the needle movement? It could be the t-stat opening and closing, mine goes from the R in normal to below the N then the t-stat opens. It will do this atound town but settles down on the highway.

Well I might have jumped the gun posting on here. I did put some antifreeze in it and it seems to be fine now so I guess it just took a second to run it through. But thanks for the advice guys!
