I have a 2001 f350 7.3 with 120,000 on it I just recently bought it, the guy chipped it with the edge performance chip, put on straight pipe exhaust and a couple other things. I started it today and it revs up higher and higher without me touching anything while also randomly smoking white/grey, and I figured out that tapping the brake stops the acceleration but it happens again shorty after and again and again. I did some research and it seems to me like it's the "runaway" problem. I was just wondering what I have to prepare myself for, is it a quick fix or am I looking at spending big money, new motor, new turbo etc etc...if anyone knows anything about this please give me some advice, I gotta get my truck back in shape for the upcoming snow season, thanks in advance.

What RPM does it rev to? In cold weather its suppost to do that.. Im not sure about the smoke but my turbo went and it was smoking a little then got worse..
How cold is it where you are - Did you let the glow plugs cycle for a minute or two b4 you start it. May also want to plug it in for 2-3 hours b4 you start it & see if this helps with the smoke. The reving is normal - It will help warm the truck up faster in cold weather. Read & search about EBPV
He's in Connecticut... Probably pretty chilly up there. Revs up "higher and higher" is a little weird. Should rev up to about 1000, then a slight hissing sound inside the cab, and a wooshing sound outside if you still have your EBPV.
I will start it tomorow morning again and see if it goes above 1100-1200.. I'm not sure if it keeps going or if it just stays at a certain rpm because whenever I heard it get louder I would just tap the brake so it goes back to normal running rpm.. This is my first diesel truck and I bought if off an auction so I don't know exactly what the guy did to it but it's definitely not stock and there is a bunch of wires under the good and a wire hookup cord that goes inside the truck and that's probably what the edge chip monitor hooked up to but he didn't leave that monitor with the truck so idk if it is acting weird because the programmer isn't there and it is not set up right or what...

Its just the normal high idle in cold weather, nothing to worry about.

No I didn't let them cycle , I just wait for the wait to start light to turn off and then I start it, should I wait longer than that ?
Yes, you should. The wait to start light is basically just a reminder for you to let the glow plugs cycle. It is not tied directly to how they are functioning. They will stay on for up to a minute in cold weather, so just turn the key forward and wait at least 30 secs, and it will start easier and should cut down on the smoking a bit. I have in the past, when it has been below 10 degrees outside, let mine time out at a minute and then cycled the key again for another minute.
As everyone else pointed out, the revving and leaf blower sound, are all part of the normal cold weather operation of the exhaust back pressure valve, or EBPV. No worries there.
You're fine. The glow plugs stay on up to two minutes. Some guys like to wait longer to take advantage of that. If your truck is starting okay the way you do it, there is no reason to wait longer.
