Flashing Check Engine Light Clears itself after 20 seconds

Hello,

Recently I've had an odd problem happen with my '07 Expedition. Twice, after I accelerate hard to get on the highway, my check engine light has started flashing and then cleared itself within about 20 seconds. My car felt like it was mis firing while I was accelerating as well.

The check engine light flash is very random, it only happened twice in the past month, yet I have to accelerate hard quite often to either pass a car or enter the highway.

The misfire feel is NOT random. It happens every time I push the pedal to the floor. The acceleration is not smooth, truck feels like it is misfiring.

I took it to a mechanic today who could not pull a code. They checked the 4 coils (by swapping each out with a new one), but would not check the more difficult to get to remaining 4. In fact, they suggest either replacing all the coils (!!) as they say it is a domino effect in this truck or simply waiting for a code to present itself.

I've already had the #4 coil replaced and when it went bad, the truck was running on 7 cylinders...and I was lucky enough to be close to home when it happened. I'd prefer not to get stuck somewhere far away from home running on 7 cylinders or having to have the truck towed.

Are there any suggestions as to the cause or will I simply be chasing a gremlin until a code presents itself??

Thx!

There is a code. Take it do a dealer or another mechanic.

get it looked at soon because if your MIL is flashing, it can damage your converters.

Bunky383 is telling you right. Flashing MIL=cat damaging conditions, shut it off. Solid MIL=non-critical problem, OK to drive but have it checked out. Either one should set a code.

if the light goes out once you get up to speed, then the there should a history code stored. not all scanners can access history codes, some only show current codes, when the MIL is actually on.
