Hi everyone.
First off, thanks to all the knowledgeable people on here. I've learned a ton since I've been a member here.
I haven't been able to find any info on the transmission issue I'm currently having so here goes.
I own a 1976 F-250 Highboy 4x4. Regular cab, 8-lug Dana 44 front end, Dana 60 rear, divorced transfer case, NP-435, 460.
The transmission in it needs a rebuild or replacement so I found one at a wreckers out of a 1978 2wd F-350. I'm aware the tailshaft housing is different. What I didn't realize was that the output shaft on the newer transmission is quite a bit larger (diameter) and the yoke on it uses a larger u-joint.
My question is: Is there any way to get this to work? Is there a tailshaft housing off another truck I can use?
I'm (hopefully) assuming that I can get a u-joint that will go from the larger yoke on the back of the transmission to the smaller existing yoke on my trans-to-xfer case drive shaft.
I hope I explained that clearly enough, thanks for reading
You can get a matching yoke for the np205. I believe the later 435's are 1350. You can make it work with a shorter intermediate shaft, but you'd still have to fab a way to hold the transfer case shifter.
As far as I know the tail shaft housing for an np435 is the same no matter what if your using a divorced or regular 2wd tranny, but I could be wrong. I also don't believe 460s ever came with an np435, and an FE tranny will not work behind a 460. Are you sure it's a 435 and not a t19, which as far as I know is all it came with, but of course I may be wrong.

There are rare later 2wd np435's with a larger bolt on yoke. A 435 behind a 460 works just fine with the proper bell housing. I was running a 460/435 combo until last week.
Is the input shaft the same on an FE 435 and an anything else 435? I've read 435s and the t18/19 share the same clutch and bellhousing components before... I'd like to swap out my 400 for a built 390 down the road and pre 78 parts don't exist around me

Thanks, fabbing up a mount shouldn't be that big of a deal for me. If I can get a yoke that works I think I'll be set. I was hoping for a bolt-in solution but some metalwork never hurt anyone.

The tail shaft housings are different. The divorced has a mount for the 4x4 shifter and the 2wd does not (unfortunately).
I know for a fact mine is an NP-435, I researched that to death a few months back. The previous owner of my truck swapped in the 460. Works fine with the NP-435 as long as you have the proper bell housing.
There was a very rare HD NP435 that came in some 70's 2wd F350's. It had a larger output shaft. They had a 32 spline output shaft. Same as the NP205 transfer cases. The yokes from NP205 will work on these NP435's. And you can get NP205 yokes for just about any U-joint size.

Wow, great info there, thankyou very much. Based on that I do have the HD 435. Shoulda got the rear axle out that F-350 while I was there too. But now I know for next time.
