99 Explorer Blower motor quit working. Disconnected and hot wired to a battery and blower motor worked. So I know it is in the switch and/or wiring. I need this truck everyday so going into the shop is out. Live in Northern Mn and the temp was -15 degrees. So as a temp fix what does everybody think of running a wire from the battery to a switch inside and then to the blower motor and then to a ground. Would have a inline fuse. If this will work what gauge wire and what amp fuse would you use. Its getting cold without heat. Thanks for any help or suggestions
There is a resistor block about the size of an ice cube screwed to the bottom of the air duct, under the glove box. You will see 4 wires and a plug into the reistor block.. One wire is 12 volt supply, the 3 resistors give 3 outputs for blower speeds. If one resistor burns out, you normaly loose low and medium. VEry seldom do you loose high speed, straight thru 12 volts... I would pull the plug and look at the terminals. You can check for voltage at that point, Small 7 or 8 mm socket to get the resostor block out and look at it. Cost about $20 at auto parts store. Its screwed into a hole in the duct so air flow will cool it... They last about 10- 15 years.
i replaced that just before winter it did not help. The fan will come on once in a while if I hit a bump just right. What do you think of my idea.. realize that I will only have high speed all the time
I think it sould work fine. If it only comes on when you hit a bump, then its not a fuse, burned wire, etc... more like a bad ground or loose wire. When you ran the hot wire to the blower did you have to add a ground or was the ground OK ? Maybe the switch itself is bad that selects L-M-H speed ? Hot wire and toggle switch would work o.k.
If the 4 wire plug to the resistor block has a hot wire, you could use it... It is already in the cab, shuts off with the key switch, and has a fuse.... also if its hot, it narrows the problem down to the resistor block, its plug, or the selector switch.
