Unless you know how the emissions controls interact with things, you may cause your engine to run poorly and loose power. Modern engines are designed to work best with the controls and all the computer feedback in place.
I would recommend working with the controls rather than removing them, most new engines make far better power than their old non emissions counterparts.
If you still want to remove things then find a good reference or someone on this website that really understands how the controls work and what happens if removed.

Also, keep the removed parts. If your state has a brain fart and start imposing smog laws, you could be s**t out of luck if your OEM parts for that model year are removed. Replacing could be very expensive if you had to buy them.
thanks for the info guys, i dont want to hinder my performance, so i guess ill just have to deal with the clutter, its nothing like my 78 where there is no clutter at all, but oh well

I don't like all that clutter either, but I would not remove any equipment, and not just because starting next month we will have to pass emissions testing. The F150 seems to be more cluttered and any of my other 4 vehicles (54 F100 - Mustang HO engine, 91 Explorer 4.0 5 spd, 98 Explorer 5.0, 92 Mustang GT).
Maybe someone here with some spare cash could experiment with a dress-up plan that keeps all the pieces functioning but makes the compartment better looking.
I have 90 5.0 EFI I removed air pump. Removed EGR.and the set of EGR switches on right side intake. Works great better mpg more power.I used 1/8 plate to block EGR port used 88.5 inch belt for removing air pump used plugs to block exg.& intake ports.sometimes you got to be brave and try things to get ahead and if you an't tryed it dont say it wont work ! I hope this helps you.
I removed all of my smog equipment (including air pump) and plugged the lines going to the emissions equipment (notice plugged, not cut, welded shut or crimped...plugged). Truck runs just as good, if not better. Gas mileage definitely increased, due to the lack of air pump. All of my emission "pieces" are in a cardboard box in my garage, marked "Do Not Throw Out!!" just in case my state decides to pass emission testing. The engine is now much easier to work on.
yeah removing the equipment is starting to sound like a good idea, i had no intentitions of removing the CAT, i have custom exhaust and its there for a reason, besides that it is a high flow CAT, but as far as the air pump thats comming off, BUT i herd that removing the EGR Valve it can cause serious PINGING in the engine, these are just concerns
thanks guys

I had the same problem when I bought my '89. Someone before me had messed with it and it would barely run at all. All the emision stuff was not working one way or the other and that cat was long gone. So to make it run all of that stuff went "in a box". That was five years ago and its still running strong 188,xxx miles so far. I still get 14-r-so mpg on the highway even with: 33's, 411's, flowmasters, and a bw 4-speed instead of the zf 5-speed. Besides if you were to do away with some smog stuff that p-side fender makes a nice spott for a dual battery tray. Good Luck
