What would cause two turbos to fail in one year? Blowing out the oil seals on both. First was a rebuilt turbo. Since it failed after 6 mths. I had a new ford turbo installed, and a week later its leaking. Both turbo failers were blowing white smoke out tailpipe, and the downpipe is soaked with oil. Both cases I heard a weird hiss then pop. Don't remember when the first happened, but the second one was done sitting in the driveway idleing waiting on the truck to warm up. After the $2800 to have the second turbo put on, I cant afford that again. Just trying to get it fixed to sell it. Also, according to service tech, power balance showed all injectors to be good. Any help would be appreciated.
What Brand of turbos? ford Installs Garret, have you checked the values for VGT, boost, and do you have the upgraded oil supply line? bump back to the top
Both are Garrett turbos. Rebuilt was stock turbo. Second was a new Garret from ford house. I have the solid oil supply line to turbo. I haven't ever noticed an over boost. Haven't checked any VGT values. How would you go about doing that? Have a SG2.

How old is the turbo that you bought from ford? It should have a warranty if it's not that old.
If the second turbo is only a week old it has a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty from Ford. Chances are it's not a new turbo, it's a reman. Check the paperwork and post the part number. I'll bet the last 2 letters of the part # are RM..... Regardless it's covered.
Im not really worried about the turbo being under warranty. My main concern is if there is something else that caused two turbo failers that had the same thing happen. Thanks for the warranty info. That does help when I go back to the shop that installed it. I will have to look under the hood and see if I can get the part number. Its not on my invoice from the shop.
If its a reman that's the problem. If Ford did the work its covered completely. But pay the difference for a new turbo and tell them you want good guy price for it. My son just had an alternator put in at ford and told them he wanted new. Guess what, they put reman in, he had to have it again but it was covered.
I have more questions than answers for you. To begin with let me state I'm not a Tech but there is something I have been wondering about for quite a while. I have never read this nor have I ever heard of anyone addressing this question. My thoughts have to do with the CCV reroute and whether or not it is beneficial to the engine? I am wondering if the fine oil mist introduced into the air intake by the CCV some how helps to lube the Turbo? I could be way off base here but it's just something I've been thinking about. My CCV is still hooked up and I have 200K miles on my Turbo with no problems. So I would like to ask you " Did you do the CCV reroute before you started having problems with your Turbos? Going thru two turbos in one year seems a little much and there must be a root cause. I can think of nothing else including Over Boost that would cause your misfortune and I do not think it's just a case of Bad Luck.I am looking forward to your answer about your CCV Reroute time frame in relation to you TURBO problems so I cam either give credence to my thoughts or put them to rest. Just thinking out loud-------TIM
When the stock turbo went out, I had not learned of the CCV reroute yet. And the rebuild stock had already blown the seal when I rerouted, bc I rerouted the CCV to see if maybe my smoke at the tailpipe was coming from the heavy oil from the CCV due to my blow by on the crankcase. Of course it didn't fix it bc it was the turbo once again. Prior to ford turbo I put the CCV back to stock bc I thought I had a buyer for it. Then I took it to the mechanic that has 6.0 experience. Everything I heard was all good on work done and haven't heard any bad. And that's where they put on the ford reman turbo, and I kept the CCV stock. A week later sitting in the drive idling, heard a pop then smoke out the tailpipe.
On another note. When I got the truck back from mech, it still smoked a little and they stated since the tailpipe was so soaked from the turbo oil, that I needed to drive it to burn it off. Never really went away before the turbo popped.
Bump. Any help is appreciated. Are those PIDs within normal ranges? Did I just get a bad turbo, or is there another condition causing the turbo failures?
