RESOLVED - Brake Light/Torque Converter

Hi guys, I have two issues that, after doing some research may be related. 1993 F150 5.0L/E4OD

I have noticed that when I am driving down the highway (in overdrive) when I pass a vehicle and turn the right signal light on to move back over into the slow lane the transmission comes out of lockup (rpms increase). Then as soon as the blinker turns off the rpms drop back down to normal.

I also noticed today that my drivers brake light/signal light don't work yet the tail light works fine. I checked the bulb and even tried a new one, it didn't make any difference. This may explain why the tranny isn't affected when the left turn signal is used.

The passenger brake light/turn signal/tail light all work as normal as do both sides up front. I tried my hazards and all but the drivers side rear work normal.

One of the guys I work with suggested that it may be the brake switch at the pedal but wouldn't both brake lights not work then?

Is it likely to be the brake switch, a bad wire somewhere or am I completely looking in the wrong direction??

A similar thing happened on my 90. First time it was from using LEDs. The second time it was a bad ground for the light. Try running a jumper ground at the light and work your way forward.
Mine would shift when the blinker was on and sometimes got really wild!

It is not a brake switch issue. The problem would show up on both sides then.
Most likely a bad ground in the tail light area or a shorted wire going to the back of your truck related to that side.

Do you have a trailer pig-tail plug? If so, check that could be dammaged causing this. A tail lamp socket could be bad too.

Thank you for the tips guys. I am only running LED bulbs in my dash, license plate lights and back up lights so I don't think that is the problem.

I do have a trailer plug that I had to replace earlier this year so I very well could have a bad connection somewhere. I have to work today but with any luck I can check it out tonight or tomorrow.

Ok so the brake switch wasn't the issue. It was my multi-function switch, I replaced it and now all my lights work and on my way to work this morning I didn't have any torque converter issues.

The turn signal switch(multi function switch) conbines the brake and turn signals so if it was bad or crossed up in some manner it could screw with it. Glad you found it.
