Need Help Wont Start

I have an 84 F250 with a 6.9 in her. Yesterday morning I went out to start her cycled the glow plugs once went to do it again and I had smoke coming out of the hood. Shut her off popped the hood and looked around didnt see anything weird. Cycled em again and saw the smoke was coming from wires. Jumped out and saw a wire had been burnt all the way thru. Started it with ether and she fired up fine no smoke. But I didnt have radio or dash lights. Headlights turnsignals and the lights for my guages all worked fine. Shut her down and ran in the store came baxm out wouldnt start with ether dad gave me a pull start she wouldnt start till he put a wire from the battery to the fuel injection pump. Only way she will start now. I need help my dad always drove 6.9s and he has no clue. Glow plugs are only a few months old its not the solenoid. HELP !!

Where are the wires located that you saw the smoke coming from? Passenger side inner fender?

So you had a short.
Either the insulation is rotting off some wires in the engine harness or a wire has chafed through somewhere. Or your radio installation was half assed.

You'll have to cut the harness open and trace the burned wire back. It has probably melted through some ajacent wires and shorted them too.

I would start by cutting the bad wire and checking for a blown fuse. After replacing any bad fuses, a full report of what has power and what doesn't (e.g., lights, brake lites, radio, heater fan, power to starter...) might help.

It seems you have no power (except jumped power) to the fuel shut-off on the IP.

slow down, think, all power flows from, long post at start relay on fender, the long post is the point that every thing hooks to. the relay is not involved in the problem. from this point the main power wire's go thru a fuse able link then to the fuse box, and on to the loads. one wire on this post is the power to the gp relay, this wire is the heaviest load on the truck, a corroded connection, or corroded wire will have resistance, and when it gets hot, resistance increases and so on. next is fire. before fire, we get damaging heat melting stuff that may not even be part of the problem. it may be necessary to replace the harness from a donor truck. all conections must be clean and tight.

But, before even thinking of cutting open the harness or replacing the harness, we need to know what circuits are affected.

Since the dash lights and radio are supposed to be on different circuits, I'd say the stereo was hacked.

Oops...I now notice the Mrs. in the screen name.

Last night, you ran 12v. to the IP and glow plug controller, and the truck started using the key like normal. Is that right?
