has anyone installed longer window reg shaft to clear door panels ??
i just ordered 2 fro mid 50 ,, i saw the instructions and i dont really under stand them
I looked at the instructions and they don't make sense to me either. I didn't replace mine with longer shafts but I did have to take apart the regulators to repair a small spring which was broken. I was unable to repair the spring so I ordered new regulators from LMC, they work great a very good purchase, tight and smooth. I will tell you that you have to drill out the three little rivets that hold the cover on, it does not take much drilling, just knock off the rivet heads. carefully remove the old shaft and install the longer one. that part of the repair is easy, repairing that little coiled up spring at the bottom is not easy. the spring was broken and allowing my windows to be rolled down from outside the truck.
I put them on my 54. As I recall there are three rivets on the existing mechanisms that have to be drilled out. You then remove the old studs with the tension springs. Reinstall the new long studs with the tension springs. Put the mechanism back together with three new bolts/nuts to replace the old rivets and your done. Jag
The mechanism has a small "army helmet" looking cap with a hole in the middle of it that holds the shaft in place. There are three rivets that hold the "army helmet in place. Inside the helmet you will find a tension spring that holds the shaft in place so that the window does not roll down by itself as you drive. Mine were broken, but a FTE'er (sorry, I forgot who) sent me two to replace mine. I do not believe that these are available, so if yours are bad, you'll have to rely on the kindness of our members or find old mechanisms at a swap meet next year. Good luck, Jag
Congratulations! You are now part of an elite super minority that can actually say you have seen the inside of the gear mechanism. Lube with grease and you are ready to reassemble with your three small bolts/nuts. Jag
