Question Window springs

Just noticed that my driver side window regulator on 54 f100 will not roll the window down. There is a small round spring about the size of a nickle that fits under the cap and around the small gear. One of the tips of the spring was broken off. It seems that this spring acts as a brake for the window to keep it in place while you are driving down the road. I tried deleting the spring and operator goes to the up position all by its self! So I heated just the tips of the spring and bent them in at the same distance apart as the little cam that fits in between. The mechanism seems to work fine, but I'm worrying that the tips may break off again. Has anybody else had to do this or is there a better fix? Thanks, John

I'm sorta having the same problem, I believe mines rusted though. I just assumed you could buy them. Could you make your own out of some metal coil? Ma and Pa hardware store don't have anything close? Also, is there anyway to pull the regualtor off? Mine doesn't seem to have a place for a screw driver or what not. -4speed

Yea it's a pain. You have to take the regulator out of the door, then drill out the three rivets that hold the mechanism together. Inside the domed piece of metal that is shaped like a farmer's hat, you will see the coiled spring. I only found mine because I was installing the new longer shafts to clear my new interior door covers. The altered one that I reinstalled works, but for how long??? In my best McCoy voice, "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a mechanic!!" Thanks, John

Thanks, I opened my acess panel again and after last weeks soaking with liquid wrech, I have now used some oil to help it glide along(the regulator still doesn't move) and it works good! Thanks again, and I'll let you know if I find a decent replacement. -4speed

Well, just to close out this thread, I installed the regulator this last week and it works fine. Now, only time will tell if my fix holds. John
